" Lebanon Express. H. Y. K1RKPATR1CK. Editor - and ProfrtetQr Lebanon has brad ell at the hands of ail three parties and has no room to complain. ,1416 popi lists nominated Mr. C. B. Montague for clerk, and were fortunate to find teirptycapitbleiQd worthf a man. Jno. one ha& given greater dignity nor. more strength to the nartv than Mr. Montague. He if known intimately to our citiiens, and in this instance, intimacy can never breed contempt. We have none bat the kindest worde for our fellow-cituen. The republicans have not seen fit to take a man fcom our city, bat they have not left the precinct nnhimored. Mr. Hardman's home is near this place and his interests are practically here. . His high standing in bis party is proven by the ease with which he was nominated at Albany, and by the unanimity of the Leb anon delegates in his favnr. When his party twice honors iiim, it re ; fleets much credit upon the politi cal ability of himself and bis sup porters. The democrats likewise honored our city in giving to one offoUr citizens the nomination for tbe most important piace on me ticket Mr. Garland was by long odds the choice of his party for the position of judge, and be received the nomination by a flattering vote over a very able opponent This is tbe first time within our knowl edge that the nomination for coun ty judge has been piven to a man outside of Albany, by tie demo crats, and our citizens will doubt less embrace the opportunity to name the next county judge. Mr. Garland's ability to fill the place is unquestioned, and careful and economical adminis tration of county affaii-s will be certain with him asjudge. The Express intends to support the men who are best qualified 10 fill the offices fur which they are nominated. There are many new names on the tickets. Kot all of the candidates are known to us, either personally or by reputation. We shall endeavor to ascertain who are the beat men and we shall sup port them. To draw rigidly the political lines in county affairs is to often put men in office who are unworthy. As far as we can judge, with the little material at our com mand, the various parties have put up average men. Each ticket might have been much stronger, and again it might not. There will naturally be some kicking al ways. From present indications, the republican ticket has caused a pronounced kick in the party, and reasons that appear to be good are given. Earnest appeals are being made to beal the sores and get into line, but some people will not be coaxed or bullied. Some men re sent being commanded to clean up the dishes that were used by others at the feast, to which they were not invited. They don't like to stand in for a ticket when they had no band in tbe making of it. There is noticeable quieting down among republican aspirants for tbe presidential nomination. McKinley, Beed, Allison, Morton and all the rest are beginning to realize that the people are not asleep. The financial question has become a fixed certainty in our politics, and will not be downed until there is legislation in its be half. ' Thus far none of tbe men named on the republican side have given out an opinion calculated to guide the public and as pronounced as they should be. On tbe demo cratic side there seems to be more, positive opinion, at least, by those men in power. That there can be no such thing as rest until this question is settled once and forever admits of no doubt, and that there can be a proper adjustment without favorable legislation tn silver being first tried, also admits of no denial. Since then we must we must have legislation,! why not have it now? Tomahawk. , Tbc Portland Chronicle says party of Portlanders who went to turned disheartened and broke. They say that Alaska has not been overrated, but there has been such a large emigration to t lint far away land thnt every position has at least 25 applicants, snd: that the country is oronded with people who have no means and are "unable to go ahead or return. The wharves and dock where are tied tbe vessels bound- for- theTnited States-'are constantly guarded by officers to prevent people who have no money attempting to get back. There will be a lot of suffering before the Alaska boom is over, and it is rank foolhardiuess for any person to go there unless he is provided with money or a permanent position. Astoria has received the follow ing pointed dispatch from A. fi. Hammond: "If Scow bay site if offered intact and free from encum brances we would accept at once and commence work as soon as could be agreed upon, bo as to have improvements ready for the busi ness; but will not accept deeds with conditions other than as pro vided in our blank forms. So gov ern yourself accordingly, bo a committee was appointed and it proposed to complete the deal at once and locate the depot where it ought to be, in a central place. The murder of a Catholic by an A. P. A. zealot in Marion county indicates to what a deplorable con dition Oregon is drifting. The in fluence of this pernicious organiza tion upon the enforcement of the lw is, also, aparent from the fact that the county coroner held a secret inquest and exonerated the murderer in the face of the most damagingevidence. Secrecy, dark ness and disregard of the laws are the principal attributes of thie political organization. Roseburg Review. The Corvallis Times says that "congresi has a notion tn adjourn early in May. It has been in ses sion nearly four months, and is tht congress that we were told was to turn all our sorrows into joys, all our tears into smiles. Will some admirer ot this conjjrees kindly r'm up and turn a cathode ray on one single item of general good that has been accomplished. Meeker, the hop king, will plow up 40 acres of his hop yard and plant the same to barley. Our farmers, too, muBt turn their atten tions in another direction. We should make an effort to secure a beet sugar, factory, and then the production of beets would naturally command our attention. Ex. Dr. Cole, who received the re publican nomination for county judge, was at one time a resident of Brownsville. His ability for office is questioned by those who claim an acquaintance. Brownsville Times. Ex-Attorney George E. Cham berlain is the nominee for circuit judge of Multnomah county on the tav payers league ticket. George is a man of the people, and the people are liable to have something to say this year. Salem Journal. Gen. Weaves, in a speech at Hillsboro, said that "the. republi can pirty killed prosperity, threw the corpse into the lap of the dem ocracy and then shouted murder."- It must be a moral sensation for I Harvey Scott and Joe Simon to be: fighting a ring. A good deal like! the devil fighting sin. Salem Jour nal. 100 toward 111 00.
