Wednesday, December 20, 1899 THE SUMPTER MINER. PLAN OF THE PLATS. Survey of Additions, Naming Streets, Numbering Houses. EDITOR OF THE MINER: At your re quest I herewith submit a few remarks with reference to the survey of the city of Sumpter for the Sumpter Townslte com pany. Now that the survey is completed and the maps of the t'tve additions have been placed on record in Baker City, I take this opportunity of giving a general outline of the work. It has been the policy of the company to do everything In a legal way, conforming their streets and blocks to those already laid out In the old town, and sparing no expense in the mat ter. That portion of the town lying In the hills has been made to conform with the configuration of the ground, the streets following the ravines and contours of the hills, in order to make easy grades for driveways and leaving the lots in the best positions for building sites, with beautiful views of the city below. The streets in the lower or flat portion are numbered h regular order, starting with the first streel east of Climax, in the old town, and con tinuing to Sixth street, along the eastern boundary. In the opposite direction, the streets are named in alphabetical order after trees, beginning with Ash street, the first street south of Austin in the already surveyed portion, and continuing south to Fir street. North of the main town in the hills, where the streets are irregular, this system could not be followed, so the names of our most prominent and best producing mines were chosen for street names. It might be opportune to here state that the city council has Instructed me to de vise a system of house numbering, which I have done. The starting point for all numbers will be at the intersection of Mill and Granite streets, numbering north, south, east and west from this point, each block to be numbered by hundreds and each ten feet of frontage to represent a number, the odd numbers being on the left and even numbers on the right hand side of the street. In this way our house numbers will never have to be changed, for we can grow In all directions, which we certainly will, and still have numbers to spare. In all matters pertaining to the survey of the townslte, the Syndicate has been most liberal and broad minded, giving me full power to proceed according to my best judgment. No expense has bsen spared and I frankly say that I have never before In my experience, been given carte blanche to proceed absolutely as I saw fit, and I heartily thank our genial manager, Gen eral Charles S. Warren, and our secretary and treasurer, W. C. Calder. Owing to the fact that I have so much engineering business for the city, as city engineer, and of a private nature, I have found It necessary to sever my connection with the Townslte company for the pres ent, and will from this time be at the com mand of the public.
