ALBANY DAILY DEMOCRAT. TUESDAY, AUGUST 1J, 191. TACrTHRM. t-Vm Packers, Costs and Profits How much do you think it costs 1. To dress beet, cure hides, and prepare all the numerous by products? 2. To cool the meat for two or three days before shipment? 3. To freight it to all parts of the country in special refrigerator cars, iced daily? 4. ' To carry it in hundreds of branch houses, each with its refrigerating plant? 5. And to deliver it to the retailer sweet and fresh in less than two weeks after dressing? Swift & Company did all this for you in 1917 at an expense of less than 2 cents per pound of beef sold, including an average profit of 4 of a cent a pound. Figure for yourself how little effect this cost and profit had on prices you paid for beef steak. Swift & Company, U. S.A. KODAK KOIt III K HOYS OVER THERE l'l' TL'HKS mean nwiv limn I.I' I i'KKS. "Usually we just 'nl;e the hoys over and jro up and down the Hne a few times. Of course the German archies shoot all the time :ind thp first time they come near, you feel like zooming it off for home. t'lt is not an uncommon thing for the Germans to waste five hundred shots on one of us during a trip ud and down the sector wo cover. So far they have never seriously injured or bothered any of the gimpers. But when the first one you've ever heard explode with a grunt near you. it's scarry, though it may be a consider able distance off. "You think it's gone through your engine or some vital spot. I remem ber one chap w took out who has since become used to them. Ye were spotted by the Germans until we were over a nest of archies. Then they let us have it, dozens of them on all sides. I Vept leading the new man on. until one exploded between us. "He dived straight down and then went homeward. When last seen he was going south full speed, forgetting all about our formation. The rest of us went home after finishing the pa trol, but he had not come back. We l et' an to get worried. j "Forty-eight hours and no word from him. Then a telephone call came ; in from a city about 20 mile off, say- ! ing he was safe and wanted a trucK ; to come over after his plane, which was damaged in landing. We asked why he hadn't called up before and he I replied: 'Well, it took me some time io get over shelKhock We had a good ; Uugh, for he was a comical chap and '.he life of the squadron. "It was another of the Kimpers. Or dinarily, if one gimper wants to pique on another for fun, it's all right, but for a new man to do it, it's bad form. .So the gimper who was being piqued said to himself, as he reported later, 'You youngster, I'll teach you to pique on a gimper.' "He turned on the new chap, who was piquing, but who had not Tired, and gave him a volley of shots a little to one side of the wings. A good shot can do that without risk of hitting the machine coming at him. It was a surprise to the new man, who dived straight groundward, flattened out and headed due south. We wondered where he would stop, and heard noth ing of him for a day and then a tele phone call told us he had landed when his gas gave out just this side of Swit zerland. His version of the story was that three boches had attacked him and driven him to where' haj landed. Hia scar, la one of the' squadron stories. . "Another of our real gfmpers, when he first started, got into a duel with a plane behind bui linea. For half an hour they maneuvered for position and finally our gimper got tt, between his victim and the sun. , He was diving and just ready to shoot when he no ticed the American coquards on the machine. h piqued at As he put it, his mouth was watering 'to let the boche have it when he saw it was an American. He pulled off and the two planes came down. ; "Once on the ground in an aviation fijlJ the two fighters looked each oth er over. Imagine their surprise on each finding that the other was an old chum from the south, where they had been schoolboys together. Neither l.new the other was in France, since they came from different camps, and only providence, that looks after avi r.tors, prevented xheir shooting each other." - - EAT SYRUP use And save sugar.
