I took up a new man, a littl chao
who had just come out from school.
1 1 did pretty well, despite the arch
ies, and we were coming home when
he suddenly piqued on a plane with
our own coquards on the wings.
"It was another of the Kimpers. Or
dinarily, if one gimper wants to pique
on another for fun, it's all right, but
for a new man to do it, it's bad form.
.So the gimper who was being piqued
said to himself, as he reported later,
'You youngster, I'll teach you to pique
on a gimper.'
"He turned on the new chap, who
was piquing, but who had not Tired,
and gave him a volley of shots a little
to one side of the wings. A good shot
can do that without risk of hitting
the machine coming at him. It was
a surprise to the new man, who dived
straight groundward, flattened out
and headed due south. We wondered
where he would stop, and heard noth
ing of him for a day and then a tele
phone call told us he had landed when
his gas gave out just this side of Swit
zerland. His version of the story was
that three boches had attacked him
and driven him to where' haj landed.

American. He pulled off and the two
planes came down. ;
"Once on the ground in an aviation

er over. Imagine their surprise on
each finding that the other was an old
chum from the south, where they had
been schoolboys together. Neither
l.new the other was in France, since
they came from different camps, and
only providence, that looks after avi
r.tors, prevented xheir shooting each
