SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 13, 1915 SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS. Mope conspicuous, than finything else continues the useless bullet Strug. gle over the Atlantic. 'p on the east aide winlrj has set in, and there is little doing around the Dvinsk region. South in Serbia is the fiercct fight of the season, in a fearful struggle to annihilate the little Serb. The Allies. soniewh.tt slow in starting, are now giving some aid, and it is possible Constantinople will not be reached as soon as was anticipated. In some parts the question of food is plrivinvr a part, sometimes a worse enemy than a gullet or shrapnel. It is declared to be so in Germany, but the statement comes from the Allies The probability is that Germany with her own resources will be able to meet the food situation for a good many years. The Germans are among the most ingenius and resourceful of the people of the world, and will no doubt be on hand with the food, in quantities sufficient for sustenance A feature of the war has been the torpedoing of a boat by one of the belligerents. Just how it was done, and without the usual conventionali ties, is a matter that is being investi gated and discussed. Whatever is learned it-is a fact that the submarine from the very nature of its makeup is not going to do business like big battleships. It's very purpose is one of inesse. It is constructed so it can sneak up on an enemy and strike quickly. Nevertheless it should ob serve humane practices and give inno cent passengers a chance for their lives. As brutal as the war is at its bast, common decency should be ob served. A peace movement has been begun thi week, one in which David Star Jordan, of Stanford, is taking zn ac tive part It is very doubtful if the warring nations, in their present tem per, will pay much attention to peace conventions, or anything else but ex haustion. Perhaps mention of a football game is appropriate after the topic war.' The game is a battle, and in some of them there is put the spirit and vim of a bullet contest. The desire " to win prevails to such an extent that men use every ounce of energy to accomplish a play. Like pep through life would mean great things. One football player who is putting football pep into his life is Bruce Evans, the evnrgelist. a young man who goes into his work of saving souls with all the earnestness of a good football player. Evans is dif ferent from most evangelists. He is not an imitator of Sunday, as some have said, hut is just plain Evans, with an individuality his own. backed by a clear head and clean life. Auto drivers will have to study the rules of safety first, and. if the acci dents keep increasing it may be nec essary to have some semaphores put out. During the winter months par ticularly greM caution should be used on the slippery streets, conductive to skidding. Buy a ticket $1.50 worth of goods for $1.25. New Elite. o 25tf adv. Siam is the home of she White ele I hant. not the dark umbrageous look ing animal that represents one of our parties. Instead of being a had omen, as Senator Lane fears, it is possibU that it is a good one. Anvw.iy a cane's head is as good a subject for jokes as anything. Europe had bctt?r keep her honey comb lot of spies at home for targets for the enemy. Taft favors Root for president. Inch suggests that if Root really wants to come up to the surface he had better whisper in the ear of the ex-president People are gettint onto the fact that the loganberry song chosen as the best is mighty poor stuff, and the judges must have been asleep when they awarded the priie. The Demo crat recently published it, putting it in the Misfit column, because it does not fit the occasion. The Port.
