The Oreeom'iin says: "It is a democratic party principal that to the victors belong the spoils." While republicans profess otherwise, no parly ever followed the rule, "that to ihe victors belong the spoil more closely than it does. It is amusing to see with what assiduity the Oregonian and other republican papers labor to show that the democratic party is the patty of free silver while populist papers labor with even greater vigor to show that it is the party of the -gold bug single standard. The Oregonian and its coadjutors rest in sereno contcutmeut the belief that they have established their proposition. And nine tenths of the read ers of the respective classified organs accept the conclusions arrived at by these papers Such is partisan politics. The newspapti or parly leader who has no higher purpose than to gain party ad' vantage over the financial misfortunes of the people at Urge, has but a small supply of real patriotism in him. He may osten tatiouily make a show of patriotism but it is all Bham patriotism. Keep your eyes open wide and you will be sure to see the cloven foot or the earmarks of a mounta- bank demagogue' The country is full of these fellows. Hard times bring these chaps to the front. The stringency now existing came upon the country under the operation of the financial and revenue laws, established aed put in force by the Harrison administra tion, and may be fairly said to be the result of the the opera' ion of such laws. The Ore gonian seeks not facts or the country's good, but party capital. Trero is no need of producing incidents in proof of the proposition that good work manship always pays.' It is too self evi dent to need demonstration. The question remained open until, hav ing agitated American politics lor many years, and having cost Mr. Van Buren the Democratic nomination for President I n 844, it was finally settled in 1845. Texas was annexed, and was admitted as a State of the Union by a joint resolution approved by President Polk. California, Nevadi, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and the western part of Colorado were acquired by conquest. They were cede-l to the United States at the close of the Mex ican war during Pilk'a administration In 1848. Nevejtheless nearly $20,000,000 was paid to Mexico, and In settlement of cejialn claims as the pries of the territory.
