the Oregonian and other republican papers
labor to show that the democratic party is
the patty of free silver while populist
papers labor with even greater vigor to
show that it is the party of the -gold bug
single standard. The Oregonian and its
coadjutors rest in sereno contcutmeut
the belief that they have established their
proposition. And nine tenths of the read
ers of the respective classified organs accept
the conclusions arrived at by these papers
Such is partisan politics.
The newspapti or parly leader who has
no higher purpose than to gain party ad'
vantage over the financial misfortunes of
the people at Urge, has but a small supply
of real patriotism in him. He may osten
tatiouily make a show of patriotism but it
is all Bham patriotism. Keep your eyes
open wide and you will be sure to see the
cloven foot or the earmarks of a mounta-
bank demagogue' The country is full of
these fellows. Hard times bring these
chaps to the front. By their fruits shall ye
know tbem.
The Oiegtnuan makes a pretense of be
lieving that the present stringency in
money matters is the result of the election
of Cleveland, Bank failures and Buspen
sions all are attributable, to the menace of
"free trade" in the election of Cleveland.
Now (11 know that paper does not believe
anything cf the sort, but it is a mere pre
tense for the purpose of making party cap
ital. The stringency now existing came
upon the country under the operation of the
financial and revenue laws, established aed
put in force by the Harrison administra
tion, and may be fairly said to be the result
of the the opera' ion of such laws. The Ore
gonian seeks not facts or the country's good,
but party capital.

in proof of the proposition that good work
manship always pays.' It is too self evi
dent to need demonstration. Nevertheless

Louisiana, as acquired from France, in

the Mississippi River from Its mouth to in

Pacific Ocean to the south line of Oregon
The other boundry follows the north line of
Ca'lfornla, Nevada and Utah as far east as
the Rocky Mountains, and thence in a gen

The United States finally obtained It from

Texas, originally a ban of Mexico, set
Itself up as an Independent republic In 1836
Its popul.tlon consisted largely of bold and

Southern States. In one year Texas had es
tablished Independence, aftel a sharp war
with Mexico, and a few months afterward
applied for union with this country.
The question remained open until, hav
ing agitated American politics lor many
years, and having cost Mr. Van Buren the
Democratic nomination for President I n
844, it was finally settled in 1845. Texas
was annexed, and was admitted as a State
of the Union by a joint resolution approved
by President Polk.
California, Nevadi, Utah, Arizona, New
Mexico and the western part of Colorado
were acquired by conquest. They were cede-l
to the United States at the close of the Mex
ican war during Pilk'a administration In
1848. Nevejtheless nearly $20,000,000 was
paid to Mexico, and In settlement of cejialn
claims as the pries of the territory. Except
ing west Floiida, already referred to, this is
the only territory gained liy (lie sword. A
strip cf land In southern Arizona was not
in the Mexican cession, but was bought In
1S53, Pleice being Prjsijent at t:ic tim-. for
$10,000,000.
Thus the country became prsiessed o! all
Its present territory between Canada on ihe
north and Mexico on the south.
Alaska was purchased ot Ri nsia during
Mr. Johnson's presidency in 1867, and the
sum cf $7,200,000 was paiJ for if. Its total
atca is almost th? same as that of ill the
crritary obtained of Mexico by conquest
and purchase.
