THE STATE CONVENTION, ski: m: uk TWO MEN AND ONK HOY DEMOCRATIC PLATt'OI.31. The following ii the platform adopted at J'oi Hand, April 2o, 192: The democratic parly of the state of Qre (onf in convention assembled, renew their pledges lo the principles unon which the democratic party is founded; rer.icmbclng mat they represent a party not created by pol- l icai expediency or depend for existence up on temporary success. Lut coeval with the con. ititution, nnd adhering throughout its history to the principles of that instrument . First AVe reaffirm the doctrine cf the democratic national platforms of 1SS4 and lSSS, ndorsed by the popular vote in those years and so over whelmingly ratified by the popular verdict in the conoression.il election of iSno. nnd noint with pride to the administration of Giover Cleveland, as exemplifying Hie embodiment of those principles in practical government af fairs and condemn the wanton extravagance of the bi: lion-dollar congress, whereby the surplus of the. people's money has been squandered. reconu we arraign the party i.i power for its utter disregard of nil the pledges made to the people, whereby its as cendency was secured at the last national election; and especially do we condemn the McKinley bill as the blighting iniquity of, the ge, TARIFF REFORM DEMANDED. Third - We declare our unfaltering nthc ,ence to the cause of tariff reform, holding that th policy of favoritism pursued by the republican party in general legislation is suL rersive of the principles of justice, equality aud democracy, and deny the ripht of the KUTcimuciib iu icvy a piuicLiivc luriii except the expenses of the government economically administered, or for any consideration save those of public welfare; we demand such a revision of ths tariff laws as will entirely eliminate from their operations personal, class 01 &fjciiui nncicsi wuii u view iu securing me Fourth We believe in honest money, the goii una suver coinage 01 uie constitution and in a currency convertible into such coin age without loss, and of sufficient volurre to meet all the demands 01 the peop e; we de- mni-I tlint all mnniiu fni no, rr iucn.i.l K.. tl.. Sixth We favor the adoption of on amend ment to Ihe federal constitution providing (or the election of senators by a direct vote ot the The democratic state convention In Portland this week was a notable gather- i.m in many respects. The lari?e number of delegates, (and the few proxies,) present was remarKed by many. The large nutn bei of active, energetic younr men in the convention was spoken of frequently, and Is proof of what hat frequently been claimed by democrats, that the young men ot the country are rapidly comlni? Into the democratic fold. This niesaies much gjod for the country as well as the parry, ihe large number of able public speakers and the United numbei cf snread eagie naranguers was alto very noticeable, iuc narmony which all, (with a lew ex ceptlons) labored to promote was a char acteilstic of the convention. But the most notable.esneciallv to those who have net closely noticed the drift o public opinion during the last two months, was the overwhelming sentiment in favor of Cleveland. Fully nine-tenths of the del egate present favored the ex-prc-ident. The sentiment too is not of the hem wor ship kind, but on the contiary, wae of the wen-considcrcd, de iberate kind. While this was the sentiment of the convention it refused to instruct Its de.r-t.-ntM fnr f- Cleveland or any one else, thus le&vlmr in the delegation, when they .-hall go to wmtago, mat treedorn of action which Is necessary to an intelligent choir nf M. didate sucecsted bv the mml.Hn j circumstances that they shall obtain whP., the convention convenes.
