aUvj democrat MAKIMi KaIX. A dispatch to the St Louis Ii.fubli from Midland, Teas. nvs: "Your cor respondent hat just reached this point of- ter driving twenty-five miles through mud 5d a,?r frm ths PJprris ranch, where Hi goverhtnehl rainfall eVpr-dll'iOn ' id eated. General Dryenforth and his party have again achieved success In their el torts to produce rainfall by artificial meant. and all this region Is rejoicing in a heavy and widespread rain-storm, which insures winter grass and averts the distress which a few weeks more of dry weather would have brought. This is the second heavy rain on the Morris ranch hich has fallen inside of eight days, besliea several light showers, and there saems to be no reason. able doubt that the rain-makers ceserve considerable credit for the copiousness of the fall. "Ten days ago the experimenters began operations, and they have kept up a con. tinual skirmish since that time. Some of the most powerful apparatus has not been used to a great extent, but large quantities of rock-a-rcck mlxtures.dynamite and oxy. hydrogen gas have been exploded on the ground, from kites and In balloons. The readings of the Instruments which Prof Curtis of the Smithsonian Institute brought from the Weather Bureau at Washington clearly show that the opera tions have had marked enects upon me teorological conditions and have produced definite and practical results. The con tinued series of explosions last week re sulted Monday night In an unsettled con dltion of the atmosphere, light broken clouds floated ovetbead and the moonlight shone brightly between them. A heavy charge of rock- a-rock was fired for more than fifty spectators, and forty seconds af ter the explosion followed the observers -were treated to the rare sight of a beauti ful lunar rainbow. This operation was repeated four times during the evening, when a light cloud came directly overhead and in every case the rain fell In from -twelve to forty seconds. Thp firing was redoubled Tuesday and the clouds gather ed and formed steadily all day until 6 p m, the rain again began to fall. Before 10 o'clock thisAyhple region was drenched flr(d SPaUed. Sill! more effective appaiatus will be brought Into operation tfc-morrow,and the rain-makers expect to see a third storm over the arid Llano Estacado before the week is out. If, so, the prairie dogs will get a drowning out, which has been al ""most unprecedented. SHODDY AND COTTON. Tha filling makaa the bal ance of 72 Dtr cent., and is entirely cotton and shoddy, in the proportion of 92J$ per cent cotton and 71 y, per cent shoddy. ' e have also before us a finer fabric nf the same order in a fancy trousering selling at $2 42 2, to all appearance a solid worsted fabric, both face and back. An examination.however ,p roves these appear ances are deceptive. The fabric is of a class known as a filling cord stripe, having a slight mixture of silk twist between the cords. The worsted Is of three-eighths and delaine stock, yet every alternate pick of filling is cotton, as isalso the warp. Thus we have a cloth which everyone but an expert would call an all-worsted cloth.'yet contains 21 per cent of cotton and 70 per cent of worsted. Oregon I AN EXTfUOKUlJfAUY GROWTH. i The Society of Christian Endeavor latc- j ly had its tenth annual meeting in Mln n eapolls. More than 16,000 societies were represented, and these Include already up- (, wards of a million souls. The society has had a most wonderful growth. It was ' started in Portland, Me., ten years ago, af- ' ter a religious revival, for the purpose of ; holding the young people to active relig- K- tous work. When four years old the society embraced 253 local organizations and nearly 15,000 members. All this time Rev Francie E Clark, who originated the fj movement, was made its president, and 3 the society was Incorporated under the : laws ol Maine. H It soon outgrew these bounds, spreading !,( simultaneously to the farthest parts of this :1 country and to foreign lands. The secret 5 of the great success li that this is an unde $ nominations! society for Christian work, j jj In the unlcn of Christians that it has pro ; ,tj moted Itrhas broken down denominational - barriers as nothing had ever done before.
