Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fel
lows. It costs the Grand Lodge about $20,'

Salem, Aug 25. Ira Adams, who was re
cently arrested here for till-tapplng. and later
accidently shot off his left hand, was arrested
agoin tnis evening, this time charged with
forgery. About six weeks ago he went to
Mount Angel and represented himself there to
B Oswald as I I Lacy, a traveling scent for
J C Brown & Co of Salem, lie said he was
short of money, and jot Oswald to cash a check
for $10. At bis examination this evening,
Adams confessed the forgery and plead for
merey, which, on account of his unfortunate
accident, the court granted him, providing
mat Adams at once pay all bis debts and give
the balance of his accident insurance money to

residing in the province of Kuan, Russi-, ha
wrstten a letter to the Pall Mall Gazetth, in
which he gives a harrowing escriptiea of the
sufferings of the unfortunate peasants of that
province, brought on by the failure of crops.
Large numbers of them, he sayi, ate in an
absolute state of starvation. Many, in their
enorls to sustain life, have betn compellec to
eat grass and leaves. There is great excite
ment throughout the piovi'.ce among the
poorer class, and an outbreak may occur at
any time.

for them to carry on business, as jaws are not

Hamburger from Santiago de Chili says that
on the 19th inst sixty unarmed youths, be

nation among all classes of peoole.
