Aug. 17, xSSe There are some startling facts in connection with the great loss of properly by fire in this country for the past few years. Very few people realize what an enormous amount of loss is thus sustained each year. It is an nounced on good authority that the annual fue waste in the United States is large enough to pay the entire debts of all the states in the Union. During the past fifteen years twenty threeof the states whose aggregate debts amount to $132,000,000 have suffered a loss by fire of more than five times that amount. It would appear in view of these facts that more caution would be used, and that the most needless causs of such terrible loss would be diminished, but such is not the, case, as there appears t o be a steady increase of loss from these causes. The number of explosions of oil and gas stoves have increased fourfold In five years; fires caused from gas jets have doubled in six years, and from the careless use of matches come result is shown. There evidently urgent necessity for more care in the use of these dangerous elements. In larg , cities, where buildings are growing more nu merous and the possibilities of a wide spread conflagration yearly becoming more hazardous there is special need ot reducing In the fame way the number and causes of fires, New England hs suffered some heavy losses within the pest two years, and the lesson thus ex pensively learned should be put to good use in the future. An Example. The teas for American consumption aro bought iu China by Euro -pean experts, who are called ' tea-tasters.'' The encyclopedias are authority for the fact that in a few years they have to giye up their lucrative positions with Bh&Uered con stitutions. One of the ' most disastrous railway wrecks ever known in this state occurred about 1 o'clock this morn- ' ing at Boston's bridge, near Statesville, on the Western & North Carolina road.
