About Albany daily democrat. (Albany, Or.) 1888-192? | View Entire Issue (May 13, 1891)
Daily Jicntoamt Fltll'El I'MIKU I1AUKIS0'. A warchouuman on '.he Wlllamettee is making $300 a day the past month by advance 011 wheat alone. Thit It one of the commercial facu oi a republican ad ministration. There are not many men who mide much by advances on grain or anything else under the Cleveland adrrMn- Istration. This will be an unpalatable statement to democrats, but there is noth ing unpalatable about the way farm pro ducts generally have advanced. It Is no' -wheat alone that has gone up. That would be explained by hhort crops in France, India and Russia. But short crops do not explain the advance In oats, corn barley and all alone the line of produce Meats have gone up and before the year is over wool win be puttv apt to advance Sheep are advancing and the clip of 1S91 will be apt to feel the impulse. Feed on the great ranges has run down and flocks will be more prohtable. All along the line the farmer begins to led encouraged Capital Journal. Doel the Journal undertake to say that the advance In the price of wheat has re sulted as the effect of Increasing the duty on that article from 10 to 25 cents a bushel? It dare not say so. It would be Impossi ble to increase the price of wheat by in -creasing the dut on Imported wheat. We already raise more wheat Id this country than can be consumed here, hence the market for wheat Is fixed In Liverpool. Before McKlnley increased the duty on wheat there were imported but 115531 bjshels for the year ending June 30, 1SS9. So, all this gush about "a commercial fact of a republican administration" Is the sheerest tomfoolery. The farmer can not be protected on wheat bv any duty large or small. The same may be said of oats of Arhich for the year lSSg'there were imported but 32,324 bushels. The increase of the duty from 10 to 15 cents per bushel had noth ing to do with the advance In the price of oats this spring. The same is true of corn. Duiing the ) ear iSSrthere were imported 23SS bushels of corn. Mow could increas ing the duty from 10 to 15 cents enable the producer to get a fairer price this year than last year. The truth is short crops is the real cause of the advance in the price of wheat, corn and oats. The same is true of meats. None of these articles are im ported in any considerable auantlty, hence protection Is Jnjpefatlve. CHsEK ANDUALLi The republican party is splendidly or ganized for business, as a political organi zation. It was able to agree on a tariff bill and on a silver bill. It passed all the principal measures to which It was pledged. Ihe billion-dollar congress was also a bus iness congress. The result of its labors will set the wheels of commerce humming. Already the producer is smiling at the in creased return of his laborsand the laborer for hire is locking up with a more hopeful expression. Capital Journal. Indeed, it is. The result of the scheme of Dudley's Blocks-of-Five arrangement oiled up a It was by the $400,000 raised by the goody goody Wanamaker.to carry the election In Indiana and New York shows that it was "splendidly organized for business, as a political organization." 'The bi!llon dollar congress was a busi ness congress." Indeed, it was. It wasted one hundred million dollars, the hard earnings of the taxpayers of the people. The '-laborer for hire Is looking up with a more hopeful expression." This is rich. When the associated press brings us news daily of strikes all over the land aud the militia and Pinkerton detectives called out to drive labor people into submission ft is refreshing indeed to be nonchalantly tol( the 'laborcv 1 kc!1'"? UP w!th ItlPr? hopefid expression." 'WOKMY.' Will ihe Democrat as readily publish our denhl that we are a usurer and would-be whiskey seller, but on the contrary for the past ciht years hac opposed the violation of these taws verv vigorously!" A crinive..i lie Jorm Journal. Of course we will. The Democrat made none of these charges, and hence leaves the Woodbarn Inilepcndcnt, that did make them to prove them or back down, Hut is not the Journal asking agoO;l deal of the Democrat in view of the way it treated the latter some time neo? It said, without the semblmce of a foundation upon which to predicate such a remark, that the Democrat was trying to discredit the alliance and sending forth the inference that there was dissension. We showed then conclusively that it had no reason for making such a statement and asked it to publish our uenial, but it does r.ot appear that it had Ihe fairness 10 do it. Will il do so now? Sot xu Advicb. It pays to get the best; even Shakespeare admitted that. In thin connection it may be remarked that W It tirnliam has just received an elegant line of suitings for the spring and summer, never surpassed in an Albany market. They are the best to be de tained, as an inspection will bIiow, and Mr (iraluim is prepared to make them tip in the latest style with n skill li is long experience has enabled him to be Minster of. Thousands of acres of the best agricultural lands in the Webfoot country that have been tilled are today lying idle and growing up to weeds. 1 hey were mortgaged lands. 1 heir original owners mortgaged them, and. being unable to meet the indebtedness thus incurred by the production and sale of cereal crops, they suffered the inevitable Kansas result a foreclosure. And then they came 10 Eastern Oregon where they have since pro'rered. The Willamette valley is doubtless one of the best agricultural recionson tilt face of the earth but it is heavily mortgaged all the same, and in that respect its situation is very much akin to the best agricultural districts in the middle west, Prineville AVttn. There is about as much falsehood in the above as can be crowded into that many slines. There are no thousands nor any acres that have been tilled now lying idle and growing up in weeds because they had been mortgaged. The writer of the above evidently set out to see how big a falsehood he could pen and print and the result shows that he has prodigious powers in that line. Let us look into facts. At the March terra of the circuit for Linn county there were over 1 10 rases on Ihe docket Four only of these were foreclosure suits. At the October term 1 890 then were loS ca four of which were foreclosures. At the March term 1890 there were 75 cases on the docket and only one foreclosure suit. At the October term 1SS9 there were 7S cases on the docket only one of which was a fore closure suit. At the Mrch term ESS9 there were 85 cases 7 of which were foreclosure suits. Here we have a showing on the sub ject of foreclosure of mortgages in Linn county for the last two years with the following result: Whole number of cases docketed 461 . Whole nunvrer of foreclosure suits 17. What agricultural county in the United States can make such a showing? It would only be just and honorable on the part of the Piineville Kews to make the amende honorable by correcting its slanderous statement about the Willamette valley.
