FINE SHOEING AND GENERAL? BLA CKSMITHING, FirsMJlass Work lade to Order. We have repeatedly shown in these columns that ihs profession, on the part of rcpublica- leaders, of special regard for, and interest in the welfare of old soldiers was, and is, as a rule , a sham and pretense. If the old soldier is a republican these leaders have a very tender re gard for him, but if he votes the democratic ticket they have no kindlier regard for him than they have for any other democrat. This fact is shown by the very ruthless manner in which they are removing oiu soldiers from office to make room for their own pets. Jerome 6 Burke, chief of the gazette division in the patent office at Washington is a democra, a Grand Army man, and atone time commander of the department of the Potomac. I lis place is wanted by some republican politician. The cornmisi ioner of patents has notified him that his resignation would be gladly accepted if tendered. It is probable tliat a policy will soon be adopted by the Indian bureau which will stop appointments, as Indian agents, of men residing in the states or territor ies wherein the reservations are located. It .s claimed that experience with home appoint ments of this kind, especially in Oregon and the Northwest, has been very disastrous to the service, the agents invariably favoring friends and neighbors, and making the interests of the Indians secondaiy to those 01 the whites.
