George Vasey, of Washington temtoiy, has been appointed special agent of the department of agriculture. Off the Track. Delta, Cal., April 14. The south bound Oregon express struck an open switch five miles below Redding. The mail, baggage and t wo sleesers left the track. They were pulled on after ten huurs delay. Nobody was hur.. lie Shot Him. Walla Walla, W. T., April 14. At I P. M to-day Sheriff McFarland and Constable Moore, in pursuit of two men charged with burglary at l'rescolt, overtook them, about nine miles east of Wallula, and ordered them to throw up their hands. The men fired on' the officers, and the officers, returned the fire, and killed one. 1 he dead man is named Tom Williams. They arrested the other man named Dave Murphy. The latter fired five shots at the officers. William's pistol was a self- cocker, and refused to revolve when he tned to shoot. The coroner s jury said the action of the officer was justifiable.
