John Jarrett must be cared for by the party now in power, and the best way to do it is to make it no more costly to the country than is absolutely necessary. He has speculated in politics under the labor flag for some years; the labor is worthy of his hire, and he must be paid. Mr. Jarrett has proposed two ways by which 1 he can be satisfactorily paid for his party ser vices, lie has a tin combine ready to start, by which he and probably a score of others could be speedily enriched, if the tax on tin is put up 125 per cent. In other words, if Congress shall tax every dinner pail and the kitchen utensils of the poor and the vegetable cans of the small farmers, $7,000,000 more a year, Mr. Jarrett would be content without an office, as he and his combine would manufacture tin. We now tax the consumers of tin some $6,000, 000 when we don't manufacture a tin plate in the country, and Mr. Jarrett wants only $7,000 000 or so more added to the taxes of the people to enable him and a score of his associates to accumulate fortunes. As there is much doubt about Congress tax ing the people many millions annually to repay Mr. Jarrett for his party services, he is willing to take the Consulate to Sheffield, England, as a full acquittance of present claims; and as that would be the cheapest way to pay him let him have the Consulate by all means. He must be paid of course; but why tax the people millions needlessly every year to pay him when he can be paid without any extra tax being imposed upon our already overtaxed peopled Consulate. Give him the TELEGRAPHIC NEWS The Czar in Danger. Paris, April 1 1. A rumor prevails on the Bourse that an attempt has been made upon the life of the czar. No confirmation has been received. Buciiarist, April 11. It is rumored that an attempt was made upon the life of the czar Sunday last and that Ins majesty was wounded by the explosion of a shell. The affair is said to have been hushed up by the Russian author tties. Over Land. Helena, April n A fatal shooting affray occurred at Flathead lake on Tuesday as the result of a land dispute. Two settlers named Hawkes and Fortin claimed the ground. Fortin occupied the land and was ordered off by Hawkes. He refused to eo unless it should be determined by the courts that he was not the rightful claimant. The parties had a dispute ever the matter, when Hawkes began firing at .... ncifuor, snooting mm through the hand and in the body. Fortin was shot in the back wnue attempting to escape, the wound being fatal. Hawkes was arrested and bound over to await the action of the grand jury. Eastern Hate. San Francisco, April n. There has been a very good uemand for money against real estate security in San Francisco thus far this year. Fortunately the saving banks have been well supplied with coin, and have met this demand promptly and at steady lates. The Hibernia bank his only one rate for all borrow ere, whether they wish to borrow much or little. imi laic is o per cent.
