Daily Democrat THE'liOODYS. Portland, Ob., Jan, 4th, 198?. Editor! Democrat : The year Is dosed, and our religions re vival hat closed. Since Mr. Mood left a greater degree o! quiet reigns. It has been a season of interest and much good has been done. From different standpoints this religious wake-up is viewed. A lad who was In attendance often.remarked'that there were no solid words or acts of charity manifested for the destitute. The congre gation was wealthy and Influential In gen eral, while there were many women who had not a calico dress suitable In which to appear at these meetings. This covered the question of bread. If the evangelist preached to these people to make them more attentive to actual wants of the poor, old and young, and to look after those of TOUth surrounded with temptations, this lady would have more respect for his work. But why criticise when the fact Is on the face of the fashionable world that he who hath not a dollar hath no soul to save. Do ing of charity is pure religion. Talking about religion, filling up tabernacles for worship, and looking out for self, to see that all the good things are at hand, to make self fat and warm, come short of religious obligation. It is the poor and needy who should have our reHijJon in substantial gifts. If we are deceived in this ths Lord is not The evangelist who goes into the highways and byways to find those who, lacking in wealth and luiury.but who need spiritual comfort, is the messenger of Him who had nowhere to lay his head, but who was the only perfect type of a christian. Great good will come from this work even if it was confined to those having all thai heart can wish. The conversion of Judge Williams is attributed by some to these meetings, but the prevailing opinion and, no doubt, true one, is,that he was prepared for this confession by his wife, who has the credit of being a firm believer and active in what is called christian science. This be as it may the conversion was timely. For a man of over sixty years of age who had'Tiever bowed the knee to God or man," may be pardoned for such expressions of opinion of his countrymen in the South as he has made, for they were the utterances of a heart of stone, one that had never felt the generous pulsations of a christian spirit. And in charity he is to be pitied, and may that Savior, whom he thinks ne has found, show him the folly, not to say shame, that has marked his bearing towards those who are not willing to be governed by a race with rare exceptions, whose prejudice, ignorance and superstition would make them demons had they power over white people. The Judge himself were he located among them would not tolerate this view about which he delights to harangue the people to show his party feality, for one moment. If his eyes and heart are open may his friends keep the devil from clos ing them, a thing which we fear the Judge is too weak to do himself, as his future po litical crusades may prove. There are others of hearts of store of the same party needing conversion, prominent in party meanness, in vindictlveness,and in social uncharitableness. Can the Lord reach them ? There is another Moody who is creating as much dry talk in the political arena as the evangelist has caused in his circle. He wants to convert Dolph and take him out of politics. But Dolph is obdurate. The excitement is low but ris ing.and if Dolph's friends arc not generals the battle will favor his rival, who is en trenched in more individual pits than is generally supposed. Being party within partv the conflict will be more intense and less tespectful than if with a common ene my. It will be bitter in the mouths of those who have no sweet morsels for a rival party brother. And the Dolph men will be slow in showing the majority which they have for the reason that their favorite should not have a walk over lest he would forget the artizans that made him Senator. This as surance may rest too long and the anti Dolph gopher hills showing the mischiev ous dlspoltlon of the animal may come up in the night with astonhing rapidity to make the battle formidable. Herman is said to have tome strength, but the idea of being a candidate seems a joke, a naked one at that. Ills friends will support Dolph if the chief is consulted. There is enough in this to give Dolph and friends great con cern. It is an open secret that Moody is not in accord with the brains of the circus. He has always shown a bawky disposition, and this is what prevented him from run. nlng for Governor a second time, and it may prevent him from being Senator, wh-ther Dolph Is elected or not. And here Is where republicans show superiority over democrats by having a strong head and a solid organization, while democrats have no head or organized body for effec tive work, llencethelr blunders, lfthey succeed it Is a blunder. But for patience under difficulties no christian can surpass them, in fact their own christian fortitude has been the leading wonder of their ad verarles for years. The candidate to be feared, and an unfortunate one for the na tion if successful, is Judge Williams. He may if the other factions destroy them selves, be the horse.and heaven knows -the color of it Is dark enough. May this calam ity never befall the state. There are two candidates more deserving than any we have mentioned, one of whom resides In Benton county and the other in Jackson, but there Is no figton nsiux for them though they have earned It, Mr. George Is not without hope, though the accident may come nearer to him than indications now favor. Time will. soon settle matters. Mr. Simon will be President of the Senate, and this does not signify but a Portlander will be Speaker. If it is not too much of a load to carry with a Portland U. S Senator to elect this will all come to pass. V.'e await returns. Watchmak. It is said that the County School Superinten' dents have adopted Barnes Readers instead of the present series of readers now in use, and that the publishers of the new books have agreed to exchange their books for the ones now in use so that so far as the readers are concerned it will cost the people nothing to make the change, in fact the people will be mnch the gainers if the new books are superior to the old ones as is claimed, for they will get a new book for an old one. We think the same liberal terms were not secured with reference to arithmetics and we fear they are really not so good as the old ones judging from what we have heard of them. Senator Dolph has introduced an amendment to the river and harbor bill appropriating one million dollars for the commencement of a boat railway at the dalles and -Celilo Falls in the Columbia river.
