In bis "swing around the circle" he has been peddling out the stale falsehood that while the house committee on ways and means were preparing the tarif bill, Havemeyer, the great sugar refiner of New York, appeared before the committee and secured such an adjustment of sugar duties as would enable him to profit large ly by It This falsehood coming to the no tice of Mr. Mills, chairman of the com mittee, he publishes a reply in which he say 6 : "The statement of Mr. Elaine is devoid of truth. Mr. Ilavemeycr never appeared before the ways and means committee at all. He never obtained any arrangement by which $6,000,000 was put Into the pock ets of the sugar trust. The sugar tiust was formed under the existing taiiff made by the republican party of iSSj, and when the bill recently passed bv the house was laid before the ways and means committee for its action every one of the five republi can members of that committee voted to strike out the reduction we proposed and continue the tariff rates under which the trust was formed." Tltis was a clincher and brings fully to light Blaine's hypocritical pre ense 'hat he favors legislation against trusts. A Protectionist organ which denies that duties increase prices, on being cornered with the question. "What then Is the object of the taiiff ?" answers: "To reduce the price of protected articles 'by promoting their manufacture where the consumer lives." But if the tariff does not permit the manufacturer to charge the consumer more than he would be able to get but for the tariff, of course it docs not protect him. And if it docs protect him In this way, eqal ly of course it taxes the consumer "where he lives." There is no squirming away from this barbed fact. QAnd now comes the word that Hermann will enter the field as 'candidate to succeed Dolph In the United States senate. But Mr. Hermann will learn In due time that he lives too far from Portland to be called such an office' It Is also said that "Great Scott" the whilom free trader Is a candl date, and that the necessity of keepin himself in good standing with his party the reason for his eccentric summer-sault on the tariff question. Paradoxical as it may appear, yet it may safely be said that the great "free trader" has lived in Portland too long to be called to that office. Mr. Blaine Implied in his speech at Grand Rapids that the increase in population, the industries, homes, business houses and nearly all other things that make life worth living in that prosperous city were due the beneficent effects of a protective tariff. If Mr. Blaine can only prove now that war taxation preserves the earth, air and water for Americans he many induce some simple Westerners to vote to keep it up. The republican national ; committee has printed millions of envelops with such sentences "Free trade will ruin the country,' "Lower wages if Cleveland is elected," and other intimdating devices. These are furnished free to all manufacturers who will use them in paying off their employ es. The weekly pay is put in the envelop and given to each employe. This species of intimidation is as reprehensible as to dri the men from the polls with clubs. MONEY TALKS. The Examiner says: Mose Gunst has in his safe some money which he and oilier friends are willing to wager on the following proporitions: $10,000, or any part of it that Cleveland will be re-elected. $5000 to $4,500 that Cleveland will carry New York. $2,500 that he will carry New Jersey. A combi nation bet of $1000 each on Indiana, Con" necticut, New Jersey and the general re sult. There are now $29,000 deposited a' the Grand Hotel to wager on Cleveland's election. Republicans say that the Chinese que tion is settled and therefore Harrison's Chinese record ought not to be taken into account in the coming election. This Is only parti true. The Scott Exclusion bill expires by limitation May 6 1892. How im portantjthen to have a president who w ill be sure to sign another bill. Congress will adjourn to-morrow, session has been a very long one. The Ferry Tickets. M. Sternburg having bought the interest of J. L.
