The jury in the case better known as the "Peyser case," brought in a verdict yesterday in avor of tl KnrthwPRt IllKliranrf Cmnnnnv Ao there were two defenses by the defendant, to-wit, that the claim ot the plaintiffs was fraudulent and that the building was fired by the insured the verdict tells its own story and leaves no place for comment, The case is said to have been a very strongly contested one and the closing arguments 'pointed affairs. The testimony of W. B. Scott, who had a store next door to Peyser, and who lost all he had, is said to have been of very outspoken nature and of a char acter that ;not even the Attorneys could hold within bounds, Mr Scott had some remarks he wanted to make, and he steam ed them out at a one minute gate. The case has attracted considerable attention here. The Rock Creek Saloon. Deputy Sheriff Smith left this morning for Rock Creek, on his second trip recently, armed with two warrants and several subpoenas. The warrants are for arrests for selling liquor to a minor and without a license. Ad Harmon's saloon is thought by the cit izens of Rock Creek to be agiand nuisance, It is also atnuisance to the railroad, for it unfits the men for work. It takes their hard earned wages and leaves them with out a cent. It is to be hoped the Rock ireeK saioon win receive its just deserts. The animals are four year olds, of fine blood, and were original ly from the stud of the late C. O. Barnes, hi iinn county, rue price paid was $450. Statesman. Miserable. The Democrat nfficehas been made miserable lately by weekly prop ositions from one Dr. Swayne, of Philadel phia, who wants to advertise at about a tenth of our regular rates, and from several life size portrait houses. If we had the men here we would hire some one to kidnap ii. 11 mm piu mem in some store that doesn't advertise so that they would know what it is to be miserable. The Mechanics' Fair. As from fif teen to thirty buy tickets from Albany to the Mechanics' fair every day the Demo. 1 rat doesn't pretend to keep track of all who attend. Those who have been say the fair is as it has been in the past, a creditable exhibition ; not only of the wares of Port land merchants ; but as well the products of the glorious northwest, in which respect it is far ahead of the State fair.
