Edgar Aver, of the bark f. tclla, while coming from Tacoma '.o this city with coal, descried the monster when the bark was passing the L'mpqua river, Oregon. The serpent, for such the captain solemnly declared it to be. on the surface of the water in a southerly direction, severabof the crew plainly saw iuui-u:r swimming by. lie appeared to be about eighty feet long, and as big round as a barrel. The condition of the people is beyond description. Men, women and children are in rags and have not a cent of money in the world.
