As a general practice, fall plow­
ing in the orchard and berry Helds
of Oregon is not to he recommend­
ed, as it docs not fit in with a soil
building or soil maintenance pro­
gram, says the experiment station.
A green manure crop is grown dur­
ing the winter by experienced o r-
ebardists, to prevent leaching and
washing of soils, and to produce
bulky organic material to plow
down in the spring of the year.

tion comes a warning to orchard-
ists of Oregon, to take care lest
they import another “pest” on
which to expend time, labor, and
spraying materials. About 31) per
c e - ' of the long filberts from Naples
arc reported to be wormy, and
many filberts from this section are
being shipped into Oregon, so that
unless steps are taken at once to
prevent these filbert worms from
entering this country alive, filbert
growers are running a real chance
of having these worms established
in their groves.
A slimy pond, slough, or even
stagnant water around the watering
trough may be the source of an or­
ganism known as B. viscosis, which,
getting on the sides of the cows and
eventually finding its way into the
milk pail, will cause the milk to
become stringy and ropy. This can
be eradicated only by thorough ster­
ilization of all utensils used in con­
nection with the milk, and elimin­
ating the source of the contamina­
tion, advises the Oregon Experi­
ment station.
