So much upset wm the editor that he was unaihle to live up to. the paper’s ap pelli tion, Optimist. It is perhaps improper for this paper to rise to the defense of the representative, but we are going to do it nevertheless. Denouncing the opposition to the bi ioge bill as an ox-cart notion the Optimist goes on inveighing against anyone who.- would pre sume to want a bridge anywhere but where The Dalles wants it. His information is less adequate than his temper. The opposition expreessed a- gainst the bridge bill was th a t it included the power to purchase e x itin g bridges across thè Col umbia. We still think th a t a valid objection to the bill which was al so inclusive of nearly every other verb giving power to obtain b r:dges. Headlines in papers along the river especially in towns where I ridges are located were to the effect that the legislature had auhorized the highway commission to make free bridge« of toll bridges. That was not the ihtent of the bill as originally explained. Certainly it should not have beep the intent of The Dalles. If commission funds are used for the purchase of bridges there will be Its* to use for the construction of a new bridge across the upper Coltmbia where The Dalles waints it. ■ Wp, realize also th at the charge of sefishness on the part of Sher man county’s representative was used to further the passage of the b'll. Furtherm ore, no one who had the figures on the financial condi tion of the three bridges could be absolutely without .suspicion as to the motives th a t caused the inclu sion of the word purchase in the bill. Sherman county knows th at if a bridge is built a t or near The Delle« it will help this county. It appahavtly knows th at fact bet ter thfcn The Dalles knows th at if a bridge is built so connect Fed eral Highway 97 across the Colum bia it will help The Dalle«. And, if tnere be jealousy be tween communities over the loca tion of a possible bridge, it is just as ox-cartish on the p art of one community as another.
