January 27, 2017 | Cannon Beach Gazette | cannonbeachgazette.com • 7A Lack of volunteers could lead to ‘contingency plan’ Firefighters from Page 1A getting more people and get- ting them trained.” Recruitment efforts to come New training officer Marc Reckmann will help the fire district with recruitment and training efforts. “He has opened the door for everyone to come in when- ever he’s here to do additional training,” Benedict said. “He’s going to be a valuable asset for us.” Benedict will continue to highlight a firefighter each month for their commitment and the fire district plans to work with interns. “There are pieces that we’re already doing to help supplement the core that we ca n n on bea ch GAZ E T T E CANNON BEACH FIRE AND RESCUE Cannon Beach volunteer firefighter Shaunna White, Anjanette Kucera Moon, Keaton Walde, Frank Sweden- borg and Matt Benedic. at an emergency medical services training in early January. have,” board member Linda Beck-Sweeney said. “I think we need to keep focusing on that until we can figure out a larger plan.” If recruitment efforts are unsuccessful, board members suggested potential next steps, such as joining another district, revamping the district’s bound- aries or changing the fire dis- trict’s bond levy to make room . “I think we owe it to the taxpayers to look at that and have a contingency plan in place in case we can’t maintain the volunteers for this district,” Smith said. “You’ve got a re- ally good core to work with. I just think we need to be pro- active ... Everyone knows this area is not an inexpensive area to live in.” Board members said it was difficult to attract young fam- ilies to Cannon Beach due to housing costs and lack of a school. “That was a huge blow to us,” board member Sharon Clyde said. Smith suggested a future work session on recruitment. Beck-Sweeney said the matter could be part of the fire dis- trict’s upcoming strategic plan. More than fires Volunteers provide ser- vices to the community be- yond firefighting. Structure fires only happen in Cannon Beach two or three times a year, Benedict said. The Cannon Beach fire district responded to 422 calls in 2016, most for emergency medical services. Volunteers responded to a wide range of incidents last year, including motor vehi- cle accidents, the Manzanita tornado, injured hikers, bird rescues, shark attacks, tree removal, a missing person, storm preparedness and more. Volunteers also help at community events like the holiday lamp lighting ceremo- ny and provide mutual aid to neighboring fire departments and the Cannon Beach Police Department. Benedict said fire agencies nationwide are responding to more incidents, many of them medical calls due to “the age and health of individuals.” The Seaside Fire Depart- ment has had similar prob- lems attracting volunteers. The department is taking ap- plications for new volunteers until March and Fire Chief Joey Daniels put out a call for volunteers in October. Those interested in volun- teering and upholding the fire district’s mission to “protect life, property and the envi- ronment” in Cannon Beach, Arch Cape and Falcon Cove communities can pick up an application at the Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue sta- tion. Volunteers must be more than 18 years old and undergo a background check and inter- view process.
