Lewis of Mikkalo, was a business visitor in the Wheat City Monday eveninj?. S. J Thompson of Fossil, was in tho city on Saturday last C. E. Illaare, a druariat, for roerly of Huntington, Ore., later of Portland, was in Condon this week looking for a location. Everybody should come and hear Senator Fulton at Condon the evening of Friday the ICth. J. A. McMwrU, ex-county sur veyor, surveyed a road in the Ferry Canyon District last Mon day, lie also did some work for Farr Bros., at Rock Creek last Tuesday. Remember Hunt, the Hard wore Man, has kraut cutters. According to the hist author ity, construction work on the new electric line to be built out of Condon will be started as soon as tho survey is completed to the John Day river and the com- pany secures a franchise from' this city. Several firms of con- tractors are ready to take the J contract and with good luck the lino will be under way before many days as the surveying par- $ ty are now working on the other f side of Fossil through which city the. franchise has already been ' v secured. Murphy of the Congregational church was giv en a four weeks vacation by his congregation on last Sunday and left Tuesday for Southern Oregon where he will spend a short time for the benefit of his health. Mr. Murphy will make a visit in Portland, Fore t Grove, and other valley towns befort returning to Condon. SUNDAY SERVICES AT CONDON'S CHURCHES At a meeting of the members oi the Congregational church hela at the close of the morning ser vice, Rev. T. F. Murphy, the pastor, was granted a month' vacation. During his absence che pulpit will be supplied. Tht evening aervice waa in the nature of a song devotional lead oy the DeMoss family and the church was filled to its seating capacity. At the Catholic church, Rev. J. P. O'Reilly closed an eight Jay mission which has proved more than commonly successful. The Rev. Father lectured on "The liible and the Church." The lectures during- the week were on the cardinal principles oi Catholicism. Father O'Reilly left Tuesday for Brownsville and Wher Dointa to conduct similar meetings. The Episcopalians who since the visit of Bishop Paddock have taken new interest in the work ,k ily have been holding services Sunday afternoons in the Baptist church. The Baptists are still consider ing the matter of calling a min ister. It is possible that the local pulpit may be supplied by the new pastor of the Baptist church at Fossil. School Notes. BY 1.K8I.IK Haki.an. Tho enrollment continuously increases in the local schools and if it keeps on will soon reach the two hundred mark. With the installation of the new physical laboratory, the Condon high .school takes rank among the best high schools in the state. The laboratory is one of the best equipped in Eastern Oregon. There artf now 14 schools in session in Gilliam county. The country teachers' salaries aver- J age about $55 and the gradr s and ' high school teachers of the var ious town3 about $C0. The annual apportionment of state and county .schools has been made and each child receives $3.60 for school purposes, besides each district receives $50.
