CONDON. OREGON. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 2, 1008. NO. 28. i wvvuui wnnnntvuvuxnfi nna fiiiii ill come STONE LAID Bishop O'Reilly Offi ciates at Impressive Ceremony. FATHER P. J. O'REILLY SPEAXS Dallvera Brilliant Addraae on Cnrlatian Education Taxt of Document En closed In Corner Stona Box. Before a large assemblage of Catholics and non-Catholics, with fervent oratory and the im pressive ritual of the Church the corner stone of the St Thomas Aquinas Academy, now in process of construction, was laid Sunday afternoon, the Right Rev. C. J. O'Reillcy, of Baker City, biBhop for the Eastern Oregon diocese, Father P. J. O'Reilly, recently from.California, and Rev. Thomas Cantwell, pastor of the local church, taking part in the sol emn excerciscs. Father O'Reilley delivered a brilliant address on "Christian Education" which was listened to with intense attention by the large gathering. The speaker is a member of ihe Order of Jesuits and is engaged in missionry work, lie possesses a resonant voice and has a pleasing delivery. He said that to the stranger coming a decade ago nothing but a vast wilderness would have greeted his eyes but how different today. The traveler finds himself in a town with promises fair, with jytizena proud of their local ins Vtftutions. He paid a fitting trib ute to the citizens who had made it possible for the school to be started in this community. He said he was grateful to be pres ent at the ceremonies which mark one of the brilliant epochs in the history of the institution. He said in Dart: "We Catholics believe in an education that cul-i tivates the heart as well as the mind and trains the child to obey their parents and the precepts of religion. Education is the pro cess of drawing out, not cram ming into a child. It has a two fold purpose -the training of the mind in profane know ledge and the training of the heart to respond to those virtues that make strong Christian men and women." He spoke eloquently of the Dominican Sis ters of New York under whose auspices the school will be con ducted. "Peculiarly well fitted are these noble women," said the clergyman," and I might say appropriately without offending anyone, better fitted than any other class of teachers to bring this work of education to splendid consummation. They have given up home, and all so cial preferments and have con secrated their lives to the noblest of all callings teaching." The speaker said that religion and learning can not be divorced and virtue and learning go hand in hand. He called attention to the importance of the school from a commercial point of view and Domted with pride to the exam ple of Gonzaga College in Spo kane which has grown tremend uously in the past few years. The corner stone bearing the , inscription, "St. Thomas Aquinas JM3)SAcademy 1908 A. D." was put in place by. Bishop O'Reilly and was dedicated according to the Catholic ritual. The noted pre late made a few remarks and Continued' on last page. JOHN DAY IRRIGATION PROJECT ABANDONED Aotlon of Reclamation Sarvlca Said to Ba Only Temporary Will Mean Mnch to Town of Arlington. The John Day irrigation pro ject has been temporarily aban doned because of the out lay required. For some weeks past it had been rumored that the government would immedia tely install a large electric pump ing station on the Columbia river between Arlington and Umatilla for use on the John Day irrigation project and ultimately for auxiliiary use in filling the reservoirs. It has been learned through an U. S. Irrigation expert that the project has been abandoned. It is not definitely known just ex actly what amount the state of Oregon will receive as its share of appropriation from the recla mation fund. It is estimated that the John Day project will cost $6,000,000. U. S. Senator Ankcny.of Walla Walla is quoted by an exchange as saying: "Yes, the John Day project has been thoroughly investigated at Washington. No doubt it will be the next large project the reclamation service will take in hand." The construction of this pro ject will mean much to Arlington. With a melange of music and song and acrobatic stunts, the Pavilla Comedy Co. entertained at the opera-house for three nights, completing their reper toire Monday night. For a one family show, the entertainment was ouite acceptable for it was replete with fun and laughter. The little girl that did the sing ing has a splendid voice for so young a child. The program consisted of farces, songs, dan cing, and an act by a girl contor tionist It was not a great show but on the whole the program presented made good entertain ment Manager Pavilla sacrifi ced his overcoat in putting out a fire caused by the upsetting of a lamp back of the wings. The actor was in the midst of an act when the lamp fell and started a conflagration of considerable magnitude. The Thespian rushed to the scene of the fire, speaking his lines all the while and maintainng rare presence of mind, thus averting a panic Kerosene lamps were resorted to because the electric circuit which connects with the opera house was put out of commission, MISSION AT CATHOLIC CHURCH WELL ATTENDED The Rev.
