Without the growth of a more pronounced sentiment for prohi bition, it will be difficult to obtain convictions for illicit sel ling of intoxicants in this county. Years ago it was a hard task to obtain conviction against horse thieves. It is different now. The omcers, nowever, wiu De au uie more watchful for any violation of the local option law. There will be no persecutions but pros ecutions will be forthcoming. Other laws are obeyed, it will be , so of the prohibition law. Local prohibition leaders may have to take a more determined step and assist to a greater extent in ob taining evidence against viola tors of this law, but it is to be enforced as rigidly as any other on the statute books. Distinguished specialists and physicians from Europe and Am erica are gathered in council in Washington, D.C. against tuber culosis a disease that has made deep inroads against humanity. The victims of that dread disease make Waterloos and Cold Har bors appear small in comparative slaughter. That science is doing much to combat tuberculosis in its various insidious forms, is one of the cheerful signs of the times- Specialists are of the opinion that the disease is eradicable but phy sicians are becoming more mod' est and reticent; with reference to curative practice and are working more and more for the adoption of means of prevention, This assembly of specialists, lio- tid physicians, and medical ex pens gatnerea . irom various parts of the civilized world marks an epoch in. the warfare against this terrible and insidious disease. ' Already reservations have been made at the local livery barns for conveyances by those who wish to attend the Mayville fair. " Condon will contribute its quota of celebrants. The fair promises to be witnessed by the largest crowds that ever il l, a. - garnered m that section of the country. The fair is a local ins titution worthy of the patronage of the farmers, ranchers and business men of Gilliam and Wheeler counties. :' It's a good thing to boost along. Remember the dates October 8th and 01, And no one ha3 started the building boom for new houses to rent When settlers arrive in Condon, will they have to camp out?-" f Political Information. The negro blood wherever It Is, de clares Ray Stannard Baker In Amerl can Magazine, supplies an element of light heartetlness which will not be wholly enmhed. In Illustration be tells this story if a very light mulatto of Tennessee: A number of years ago It came to him suddenly one day that be was white enough to pass anywhere for white, and be acted instantly on tbe inspiration. He went to Memphis and bought a first class ticket on a Missis sippi river boat to Cincinnati. No one suspected that he was colored. lie sat at the table with white people and even occupied a Stateroom with a white man. At first, be said, be could hardly restrain nis exultation, but after a time, although he associated with tbe white men, be began to be lonesome. "It grew colder and colder," be said. In the evening he sat oa the upper deck, and as he looked over the railing be could see down below the negro passengers aud deck hands talking and laughing. After a time when It grew darker they began to sing tbe inimita ble negro songs. "That finished me," be said. "I got up and went downstairs and took my place among them. I've been a negro ever since." . SAVED HIS BOY'S LIFE isr .i i. iy inree year oia Doy was badly constipated, had a high fever and was in an awful condition. I gave him two doses of Foley's Orino Laxative and the next morning the fever was gone, he was entirely well. Foley sQrmo Laxatnve saved h!a life." A. Wolkush, Casimer, Wis.
