The country press of Oregon --the papers , in towns under 3,000 population-as well as the majority in larger towns is standing, almoBt unanimously, for Statement No. 1, as well as the rest of the primary law. This la significant These country editors are in close touch with the surrounding farmers and various business men and no doubt reflect their sentiments as well as their own. The "common people," as ac cumulating evidence is showing, are in favor of making State ment No. 1 a vital, active, and not merely a permissive and neg ligible part of the primary law, Watch the common- people, They won't go far wrong. They want to elect their senators. And they want the majority to rule. This Is all there is in Statement No. 1. Isn't it right?-Oregon Journal ' The spirit of progress through out Oregon was never more pro nounced than at the present time, The commercial organizations of the state seem to be determined to do more effective advertising than ever before. There is spirit of organization in the air, and the biggest effort centers upon the colonist rates from March 1st to April 30th, and the $30 rate from all points in the Middle West to all points in Ore gon Is emphasized in every ad' vertisement and every appeal. The positive assurance that Swift & Company and other great packing companies will locate enormous plants at Portland will give an impetus to the livestock industry of all this portion of the United States. The location of these packing houses will add to the value of the holdings of every breeder and producer of cattle, sheep, hogs, and poultry. About this season the most of the New Year's resolutions have been put in cold storage against the first of next January unless some of them are still honored by the candidates now up before the primaries. This talk about a $(58,000,000 fine against the Standard Oil Company would sound a good deal better if -the government could show the least indication of ever getting the $29,000,000 fine it has already imposed. There is to be submitted at the June election, by initiative, a bill called '"Corrupt Practices Act," which makes it illegal for a per son to "in any manner try to in duce or persuade another person how to vote at any election. Joseph R. King, ono of the best agricultural writers in the world, in an address at the Ore gon Agricultural College recently said: "I am proud of things that I can do: I can pack a mule; I can cut a tree no it will fall where I want it to montly. I can hew a plank straight; 1 can strike a drill all day without striking. the other fellow; I can rig a plow so that you can hold it with tho thumb and first fin gcr; I can walk five . miles an hour; and some other things I can do I am proud or. l am prouder of the things I have done than the things I have said. It takes more brains to rig a plow right than to do a problem in Algebra. When you learn a thing you want to do it, and the man who gets the moat out of life 'uses hia arm as well as his brain." If Mr. King's philoso phy is right, and it undoudtedly is, then it is possible for the fanner to get more out of life than any other class, for brains and muscle are a necessary part of the equipment of every good farm, and there is abundant op portunity there for the employ ment of both.
