A movement is on foot among some of the farmers of the May villa and Buckhorn localities to try to have the Condon branch of the railroad extended to the Buckhorn country or at least as far as the Smith ranch on Thir. tymlle. They expect to circulate a subscription paper among the farmers of those sections and ex poet to raise at least $2000. Sev eral of the extensive farmers who would receive the largest benefit from this move have al ready promised large sums, Chas. Hein, one or the pro moters of the movement, having promised at least $200. Several! others have subscribed $100.! and it is reported that they will have no trouble in raising the required amount Should this move prove suc cessful even though the branch were extended only to the Smith ranch, it would be a great boon to those who live south of Thir , tymile who now, haul their pro ducts to Condon and they would be amply paid for the amount they subscribed by the raise in value of their land. Dugger-Ralnbolt j LaurenceS. Dugger and Miss Ida Rainbolt were united in marriage Tuesday evening inthcj parlors of the Hotel Oregon, Rev. ! Kiggs performing the ceremony. The bride lately arrived from Butler.Tenn., which was also the groom's former home. The groom resides near Mitchell in Wheeler county where the couple will make their future home. Brunzel, of the firm of Brunzcl & Son, who went over in the Mitchell country for cattle, is returning with 110 head of al falfa fed cattle. They are said to be the best bunch ever sent to market from Condon and were bought of Gross of Fossil and Connell Bros, of near Prineville. Paul Brunzel is also busy, hav ing bought two carload of cattle from Portwood of Rock Creek, one carload from Ball of Fossil, one carload of hogs from Hughes of Ferry Canyon, besides shipping 1000 lbs of dressed poultry to Portland this week. ', L. E. Searcy L E. Searcy died at The Dalles Monday morning from the effects of peritonitis. He had been sick for over a week and had been taken to The Dalles for an oper ation. The body was brought to Condon Tuesday evening and services, conducted by Rev. Riggs were held at the house under the auspices of the Foresters of America of which lodge Mr. Searcy was a member. Those of the Foresters who went to Ar lington to meet the remains were Jas. Morphett, George Wasson, John Randall and Frank Moore. Burial services were held at the Mayville cemetery at 2 p. m. Wednesday. L. E. Searcy was born at Chico, Calif, in Septem ber, 1875'and came to Mayville with his parents when he was two years of age, living there until they later moved to Condon where he has lived until his death. He was a good friend, well liked by everyone and the news of his untimely death cast a shadow over the entire com' munity. He leaves a wife, fatlv er and mother, brothers and other relatives to mourn his loss, DO'iNSS ATTHE PUBLIC SCHOOL Isa Wasson, Georgia Searcy and Edith Ward did some good work at our recent assembly. , Mrs. Edith Austin is teaching in the place of Mrs. Searcy, who is absent because of the death of her husband. Teachers' meeting this evening at which time "Methods in Arith metic will be discussed. Miss Hershner is oil duty this week on account of la grippe. The class in book-keeping has turned out to "be full of business people, having gone into "actual business" Tuesday and they can handle money, and goods like professionals. Several pupils are absent from school this week on account of sickness. . Card of Thanks We desire to thank the many friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and death of our be loved husband, son and brother. Mrs. L. E. Searcy B. K. Searcy and Family Rev. G. W. Riggs has decided to accept the charge of the Congregational church at Park Place, a beautiful village across the Clackamas river from the! picturesque grounds of the Wil lamette Valley Chautauqua Association, on the main line of the Southern Pacific and only a short distance from Portland. ' In Rev. Riggs' leaving from the charge of the work of the Congregational church, Condon loses, the strongest and most fearless pastor she has ever had. As a pastor he has put new strength and power into his church and has increased its membership; as a leader in his community, he has always worked in his tireless manner for the betterment of his town. lis work in Condon, as the father of nearly all the different denominations, has been and is appreciated by all, and we join his many friends in wishing him success in his new field of labor. The church has called Rev. T. F. Murphy, of Wisconsin, to fill the pastorate, who comes to this city with high reccommendations. He is a graduate of Beloit Col lege of that state . and of the Chicago Theological College. Rev. Murphy is expected to arrive this week to occupy the pulpit at both services Sunday. Rev. Bentzien of Portland will preach in the Baptist church next Sunday morning, and eve ning. John Hess left this morning for Goldendale, to take the posi tion of bookkeeper for the Fraz- er Hardware Co. Hurlburt was the scene of a delightful gathering on Monday evening when Mrs. Hurlburt entertained at Five Hundred in honor of her sister Miss Welsh of Arlington. L E. Laurance, who received the high est score of the evening, was presented with a beautiful flower vase. The hostess, assisted by Miss Welsh, served refreshments to her guests. Those who were present were: Miss Welsh, Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Hurlburt, Mr. and Mrs. L. . Laurance, Misses Brehaut, Ranney, Fitzmaurice, and Lillian Ranney; Messrs. H. Fitzmaurice, Nichols, Taylor, Meresse and M. Portwood. J. C. Stugill's announcement as a candidate for the office of County School Superintendent appears in the announcement columns in this issue.
