THE COIIDOII GLOBE. THURSDAY JANUARY 8, I0O3. THE TELEGRAM EXPLAINS. In rrwiil ?sue Im Portland Evening Tlrgmm fxplrtiiia Its blundering reference to (HUtam County in its otherwise excellent Cltriftuta etlilkn with the follow ii'g: v -TTrrKtgH inadvertence, in the timiiil ClirictniHs edition of The Evening Telegram, Arlington was credited with being the county seat f Gilliam county, instead of Con don. It is needlera to say that the writer of the article knew better. It might aim to added that ouch a mistake probably would not have been made had not the writer wait ed up to the last hour possible to ubtaiii some reliable data from Gil liam county which however was not forthcoming. The county offi clals of Gilliam county appealed tc for up-to-date matter in reference to the county evidenty did not think it worth while to respond. In the rush and bustle of waking up . the paper on the eve of going to press the error crept in. This. is the explanation. Perhaps no apol gy is necessay.'" This explanation will no doubt ie acceptable to- tb people of Con A)n, and thwcwnty in general, so fir as the Telegram is concern ed, Jor even newspapers cannot be expected to be infallible in such matters if reliable data is denied tbem by those who possess it Our county officials whoever of them was appealed to in this instance should in the future recognize such appeals from all reliable newspa pers and thereby promote the in terests of the county which they represent. Newspapers have the right to ask for such information and the county has a right to have it furnished to the purveyors of news in order that it shall appear in a favorable light to the public at large. A Cure for Lu mbaRO.' W. U. Williamson, of Amherst, V., says: "Ifor more than a year I suffered from lu-uUto. 1 finally tried Chamber I Hill's Pain Balm and it gave nw 'entire relief which all other remedies failed to do." V a sala by O n Ion Pnaruaacy. OPEN THE COLUMBIA. u Portland could well afford to bond itself for $5,000,000 to open the Columbia River to Priest Rap ids and the Snake to Lewie ton," said a prominent railroad man yes terday. ''It would be the making of the town, and money ?peiit in such improvements would return many times over, lhat would solve the railroad problem for the Columbia Valley." "How do you figure that out?" ''Doesn't require any figuring at all; plain as a pike staff. Suppose steamboats could tomorrow run through from Priest Rapids and Lewiston to the Portland wharves. Freight would be carried by water for 11.50 a ton, and the boats would make a reasonable amount of mon ey. The railroads would be forced to reduce their present charges of $3 to 13.50 a ton to the steamboat level or lose the business. They will make the reduction. The road on the water grade down the river could afford to carry freight at that rate; the road over the mountains could not. The. result would be that all the traffic would come down the river. No railroad could afford to cary the. immense traffic of the interior Columbia Basin over the mountains at a loss. There is too much of it and a small loss on ctanoTrt4 miMo oppfetwfaj of the afore mentioned "induce- figures pretty quick. The Colum bia River would then rcuive and discharge all the traffic from the Clu u i t iinl i. r .114 would all be grist to Portland's mill. Competition among the railroads will never bring abjut this situa tion of affairs. They love money better than they do people and they will get together to maintain rates though they may be deadly enem ies on general priciples. But you : Remarkable Cure of Croup. I have a few words to say regarding Chamberlain's Hough Uemedy. It sav ed ray little boy 'a life and I feel that I cannot praise it enough. I taught a bittleof it from A. E. Steere, of G-kmI-win 8. D., and when I g')t home with it the poor baby could hardly breathe. I gave the medicine as directed every tn minutes until he "threw up" and' then I thought sure he was going to choke to death. We had to pull the phlegm out of hia mouth In great longRtring8. I am positive that if I hail not got that bottle of cough medicine my boy would not be an earth today. Joix Dem-'NT, Iux-ood, Iowa.---. . teuld by Coiiduu rbaruiacy. put a free river up Into the heart of the great producing country and see how rates will tumble. No bar- nioniiation policy or traffic agree ments will keep them up. The river will regulate all the commerce of the Valley though it may actu ally carry but a small part of it. This would justify great effort on the part of Portland to open the river even on the basis of the pres ent volume of business of the Col umbia Valley. But see what an impetus would be given to the de velop;3itof tha interior ouiitry. In five years the volume of traffic handled would be quadrupled. The transportation companies themselves would make more mon ey because they will carry so much more freight The country would become more populous and there would be diversity of industry and cars would be loaded both ways and prosperity would abound. And Portland would command it all. I tell you Portland could well afford to put up $5,000,000 to get the ri v er open. The government will probaby make the required im provements in time but cities yet unborn may outstrip Portland if it waits for the slow action of the General Government. I think a railroad down the north bank of the Columbia clear to its mouth is inevitable too. A railroad can serve only one side of a river unless numerous bridges span the stream. All the large rivers have railroads on both sides and they do not interfere with each other. Take the Mississippi, the Hudson, the St Lawrence for examples The Columbia is as big as any of them and there is plenty of room for a railroad on either bank. When they are built there will be no more ferriage of through traffic. I am now convinced that there will be no agreement between the Harri tnan and Hill combinations for a joint railroad to Lewiston and joint trackage down the Columbia and to Puget Sound and I think the North ern Pacific people have made up their minds to that and are now en gaged in operations that will not end until there is a railroad all the way down the north bank of the river. They see the time com ing when it will not pay to haul freight over the mountains in com- tidewater and they . are preparing for it. But Portland ought to in sist on the prompt opening of the Columbia River. Nothing else will do so much for this city." Oregon ian. "Some time ago my daughter eanght a severe cold. She complained of pains in ber cheat and had a bad cough I gave her Chamberlain' Cough Remedy according to directions and in two days she was well and able to go to school. I have used this rented in my family for the past seven years ana have never known it to fail," says James Prender gest, merchant, Aonato Bay, Jainica, West India Inlands. The pains in the cheat indicated aaapproaching attack of pneumonia which in this Instance was undoubtedly warded off by Chamber lain's Cough Remedy. It counteract any tendency of a cold toward pneumo nia. This remedy is sold by Condon Pharmacy. The legislature will soon be in session and the election of a United States senator will be the main thing before that body. Necessrry legislation in the .interests of the taxpayers don't worry the average legislator to any alarming extent "Pie''graft''booze" and good sup pers and in some cases a wad of the "long green" are more to his taste. The several aspirants for the senatorial toga, or their man agers, will no doubt be in a position to Hunnlv or oromise a nart if not ir.ents"and there should be about 30 days of lively times ahead for the representatives of the dear peo ple of Oregon. "I have noticed that the sale on Cham berlain's Stomach & Liver Tablets is al most invariably to those who have once used them," says Mr. J. H. Weber, a prominent druggist of Cascade, Iowa. What batter recommendation could any medicine have than to have people call for it when again In need of such a rem edy? Try them when yon feel dull af ter eating, when von have a bad taste in your mouth, feel billions, have'no appe tite or when you are troubled with con stipation, and yon are certain to be de lighted with the prompt relief which they afford.
