Grand old Gilliam' i all right and it is growing better each ' vear. Briton and lloer have buried the hatchet and smoked the pipe of peace. The African Dutchmen are now subjects of King Ed and it is likely that they will be treated like men ttv the future. John B. will not be after looking for trouble with those particular subjects any more. The delinquent tax list has at last been published in the Arling ton Record and fills almost six col uuins'of that paper. The list in cludes taxes for the years 1S93 94 '95 96 7 3 9 and 1900. Many of the names are of persons who died or left the country years ago. Chile has adopted a new liquor law that is attracting world-wide Attention. Saloon licences are sold awa w ft K ma irna paftntKa Vl i a K B e t ' bidder. Liquor cannot be sold with in 200 yards of church, fechool, bar racks, place of amusement or rail way stations; nor on trams; nor to minors: nor between the hours of midnight and 6 a. m. No one in any way interested in a liquor license is eligible to public office and every distillery has a govern uient chemist j "to insure the purity of the product The initiative aud referendum amendment to the constitution car ried at the receut election by an overwhelming majority. This is the first of many proposed amend ments to the constitution that iaa received the. sanction of the people and the further fact that the propo sition was first agitated by the "wild eyed" "long haired" "crazy" populists and wa laughed to scorn -rrmeahiilTyTftWBW the people of Oregon have awaken ed to the fact that the functions of government have been slipping away from them and have been ab sorbed by a few politicians and schemers and they have made up their minds to takea band in the government themselves. The conflict in the senate as to which of the two isthmain routes for the canal is better, is waxing warm. This injection of mother earth's troubles and dangers from her eruptions has caused a new ele ment to be added and makes the settlement of the conflict more dif ficult. It is probable also that the railroad are working on the quiet to make the settlement as difficult as possible, for they hope that the continental carrying trade may con tinue to be done in their cars. But if the absorption of steam boat lines continues, the time will soon be reached in which it will be a matter of indifference to the railroad men whether the commerce of the con tinents goes in. ships or cars, for they are likely to own them both. When that time is reached prob ably James J. Hill will make a per sonal inspection of affairs on tbe isthmus and tell Uncle Sam which route he ought to select. Doubtless Uncle Sam will then be obedient and get a move on. Just now he is apparently indifferent. Washing -tonian. . Read It In His Newspaper. Two desperate prisoners at the Oregon state prison, at Salem, killed three of their guards and moi tally wounded life term prisoner and made their escape Monday morning. The men are Harry Tracy and David Merrill and the were serving terms of 13 and 20 years respect ively for robbery. They were armed with a rifle and revolver each and bow they secured the arms is a mystery. The desperadoes walked into Salem Monday evening, held up a citizen on the street forcing him to give them his clothing. They then walked n n molest ed through the city, stole a horse and bnggy and drove toward Portland. Blood bounds have been secured with which to trail them. The officers are said to be not over anxions to get ii.to close quarters with the convicts who are known to be absolutely desperate. For hilionenass nse Chamberlain's Stomach & Liver Tablets.
