The conflict in the senate as to
which of the two isthmain routes
for the canal is better, is waxing
warm. This injection of mother
earth's troubles and dangers from
her eruptions has caused a new ele
ment to be added and makes the
settlement of the conflict more dif
ficult. It is probable also that the
railroad are working on the quiet
to make the settlement as difficult
as possible, for they hope that the
continental carrying trade may con
tinue to be done in their cars. But if
the absorption of steam boat lines
continues, the time will soon be
reached in which it will be a matter
of indifference to the railroad men
whether the commerce of the con
tinents goes in. ships or cars, for
they are likely to own them both.
When that time is reached prob
ably James J. Hill will make a per
sonal inspection of affairs on tbe
isthmus and tell Uncle Sam which
route he ought to select. Doubtless
Uncle Sam will then be obedient
and get a move on. Just now he is
apparently indifferent. Washing -tonian.
