The band averaged 15 pounds and more and the wool is of extra quality In toxture and staple. ' Work has commenced on an artesian well on Henry Wilkins place near Clem. The same drill lent work. which was successfully used on Kobcrt Spencer's and Leroy Paul's ranches laHt winter. A hole was recently sunk on the Weath erford ranch on Khntler Flat but with out success If Mr, Wilkins secures, a strong artesian flow "he will be well pleased but a stood pumping well Is not to be sneezed at. While coming to town Friday evening on horse back, Pat Skelly's horse fell with him throwing Mr. Skelly to the ground with great force. He was badly stunned and bruised but fortunately no bones were broken. Herman Pauling was riding with Mr. Skelly and be and others, who ran up from town rendered him necessary assistance. Obituary. Joslah B. Smith died Saturday, even ing, June 15, 1901, at his home on Tltlr tymlle, near Condon, after a brief illness of about 24 hours. Although he had I teen ailing for several years he was heard to say a short time before his death that he had been In better health for the last two or three years than for a long time, Dttceai'id was born '.In Illinois April 1, 1632 anft removed, with the Powell fam ily to the Willamette valley In 1851. To their union waa born eight children all of whom are still living. In 1885, with his family, he removed to Eastern Oregon settling on Beecher Flat, in this county, where he resided until about seven years ago when he moved to the place on Ttiirtymile that has since been his home. . lie was respected by all who knew him and It has been, truly, said -of him that ho had not an' enemy in the wo'rld. He w as a thorough christian, being a member of the Christian church, and bright, broad hope waa the very breath of his nature. It waa aconstant comfort to htm to know that aeveral of his sons were near him In bis declining years and It was a comfort to his children to know that more tender filial devotion or a more loving father was never known. The children are: Mac, Art., Joe, Lud. and George Smith, of thiacountv, Kd and Frank Smith, of Albany, and Mrs. May, cf California. One brother and one sister, w ho reside in Kansas, sIho survive him. The funeral took place at the family residence, Monday, June 17th., and was largely attended the cervices being con ducted by llev. Curran, of Condon, and Rev. Lawson, of Fossil.
