Citiruiii , Borton of the Con presRional committee in Rivers ami Harbors, accomjani(Hi by almost, the entire committee will visit Oregon during th present mouth, arriving in Portland Frily morn ing, the 2Mb. Inst. Their miesion to this coast at the present time is to make themselves familiar with the needs of the rivers and harbors of this section of the country in order that they may he better able to perform their duties jHn there assembling of Congress. The Portland chamber of Cmimerce will entertain the committee diriuj its stay in that city and will do all in their power to ac quaint them with the needs of the Columbia river. The city of Lewiston. Idaho, will also show thecinaitte every con sideration and has arranged to charter the finest steamboat on the Upper river which will be placet! at the disposal of the coimuiitce, for ' their use in inspecting the Snake and Columbia rivers from Lewioton to th Calilo rapids. It is believed that a visit from this most important committee will be of great value to the project of opening the Columbia to naviga tion and it is not only a matter of courtesy but a business proposition as well for the people of Oregon, Washington and Idaho to show them every consideration. If the Columbia is opened to navigation in the near future it will have to be done largely by the ction of the committee on Rivers and Har bors in Congress. Some time ago big fraud were discovered in army circles at Man ila and now the same condition of affairs are found to exist in San Francisco. Can it be that this form of nural disease, that causes army officers to steal everything in sight if it only belongs to Uncle Sam ana is loose, at one end, is a product of- the Philippines all the sim-jas Minila itch." Is, it one of the blessing 8 which is supposed to flow from '"Benevolent Assimi lation" or is "Criminal Aggression" from; the Orient taking a whack at America? ; The British government has de cided to tax the Transvaal gold mines with one half the cost of the Boer war, or $2 )0,000,030. These mines are owned by rich English companies and were the real cause of the war hence the tax. If the mine owners are "next" they will employ J. P. Morgan, or some other American coal mineowner.to figure out for them just how much they will have to cut the wages of their worklngmen in order to make money out of the transaction. The evening Telegram registers the following kick: "A large book on mosquitos has been sent to this office for review. We cannot conceive how a man fills a book about the pesky thing. All that we ever heard could be said about them could be written in one line." But the Telegram does not quote that line. Secretary Eliha Root is said to be President McKinley's choice for the next republican nomination for president. Mr. Root is said to be closer to the president than any other mn in the cabinet and may, for that reason, be considered by the opposition as being the "root of all evil." . Read It In His Newspaper. Prtre 25 cents Pullman Ordinary Sleepers The tourist travel between the East and the Pacific Coast has reached enor mous proportions in the last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls the'Tollman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers being built on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, , towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stoie for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to make np berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched daily from Portland by the O. R. & N. Co. is to be found one of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers". The car attached to the "Chicago-Portland Special" goes through to Chicego without change, and the one in the "Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City without change. Passengers in this car for Chicago change to a similar carat Granger. Much of the first class travel is being carried in these cars, the rates being lower, and the service nearly equal to that in the palace sleepers.
