JAN. 1 1909 "The Oregonian's arraignment of Statement No. 1 is apparently based upon the assumption that all meu are liars," is tne assertion made by the Bine Mountain Eagle, a Canyon City paper. Continuing it says that the Oregonian "assumes, that men can pursue any conduct, consistent with integrity, so long as it does not conflict with expediency or their own advan tage. It would argue that the admin istration of the government under the repnblioau party depends upon the l members of the legislature repudiating their pledges. Like a moral pervert, it reasons for the justification of moral crime. This Holy Political Boiler is enlisted to the sanotimonious post of presiding elder of Roosevelt's Annanias club, for inasmnob as it admonishes men to break their word and pledge, it is logical deduotion that they can have no regard for their own veracity. A liar is contemptible but a man who prooures and induces others to lie is a moral pervert, and he laoks entirely that moral nature that differentiates " man from brute creation. As a matter of faot, Statement No. 1 is not a politi cal question at all. Where applied it is simply a question of a man's integ rity. If a man is a liar, he will go lack on his pledge as the Oregonian advises, and if on the other hand he 'Meant what he said, when he made a freehand voluntary pledge, he will keep, his word in spite of the Ore- - ' 1 "oniatj. " The JJilton Eag'te correctly sizes the tion at Hermiston, when it says: new town, iiermielon, on the oment irrigation project, is sadly capped. It is controlled by rival '8 the railroad track being the ig line, and its energies, instead ig devoted to the upbuilding of wu as a whole, are washed in al fight, to the detriment of all. t move is an aotion brought ' trouit court to knock out , tjtie k ation of the city, the ob ' jpot being' to annul the last city eleo- , . . nun in oraer io give tne "outs ' nn , other chance to get in." In marked contrast with the baokbiting, pulling i und hauling contest, which is slamp .( iog a blight on Hermistoa prospeots as a town, and keeping capital from investment there, may be cited Echo. In that thriving-go-a-head little city, every one has bis shoulder to the . wheel, inoluding the sohool children. Everybody is pushing for the good of the town and the latest stroke of pro ' -fire8B enterprise is heard in the announcement of a 175,000 scouring mill, wbioh will give employment to CO men. A press dispatch of reoent date ohronioled the death of Soipio Craig, for 21 years editor of tbe Redlands, , California Citrograph. The Oregon Agricultural College wishes to secure definite information as to poultry keeping on the farm, the methods followed and results se cured. With this objeot in view let ters are being sent to farmers so as to get their observations on this branoh of agriculture, and a summary of faots seoured in this manner will be pub lished in bulletin form. The prices of poultry products are suob ns to warrant greater attention being given to this branch of farming. Even with the attention tbat is now given to poultry-keeping, the industry is an im portant one. From the best informa tion available, the poultry and eggs produced in this state in 1908 reached a total of about $5,000,000. In spite' of tbis thousands of dollars are sent out of this state eveiy year for poultry and eggs, and if tbis money oould be kept among our own farmers it would add muoh to the material prosperity of our communities. Requests bare been made tbe College to establish a home reading course in poultry oulture and if a sufBoient number signify their de sire for such a course, it will be given. Associated Press despatches do not by any means make a metropolitan daily newspaper. Never has tbis faot been more apparent or more forcibly emphasized than in tbe case of the Spokane-Spokesman-Review. Tbe Spo kane paper has flatly fallen down in covering one of tbe greatest events tbat has for years transpired in tbe falls oity tbe great. Sunday revival. Its hundreds of readers who are unable to attend tbe meetings, naturally ex pected to read the sermons in what is touted to be Spokane's leading paper, bu( they are given instead, a bum col lection of excerpts, graphically feat ured in "sporting page" etyle and makeup. Tbe annual bargain day of tbe Ore gon Daily Journal, the one great paper of the Oregon pountry, oomes tbis year on Wednesday, February 3. For tbis one day only yon can seoure tbe Daily and Sunday Journal by mail, one year, for 5; Daily Journal, for $3.75; Sunday Journal, "tbe big pa per," for $1.50; semi-weekly Journal, for 85 cents. No paper in tbe north west has made greater strides in pro gressive journalism tbau has tbe jour nal in tbe past three years. It is the paper read by tbe multitude tbe pa per of the plain people. Tbe Pasadena, Cel., church people bave guaranteed a oertain attendance at Saturday ball games in that city provided they are not played on Sun day. Hf re are a few of tbe sayings of "Billy" Sunday, which bristle in bis evangelistio sermons, wbioh be is de livering in Spokane: "Away with tbe idea that Jesus Christ was a dough faoed, pudding-beaded sort of a prop osition who let any one make a door-, mat or a bitobing post out of him. He was a great leader, a great general and you are in bis army." . Christ did miracles beoause those miracles were his credentials. He bad to do more than walk np and down saying, I am tbe son of God.' " Cbrist ; bad 12 disoiples and one of them was a devil old Judas, you know who I mean. All some seminaries are doing is turning out two-by four infidels in a tbeologioal mould.' "Joshua was out : having a fight with a bnnoh of men one time and it began to grow dark. Joshua said to God, 'I haven't got through with tbis job yet. If you will bold the sun bach for a while I'll liok tbem to frazzle,' and God reaobed out and took the sun by tbe neok and shoved it back and said, 'You stay there. Atier while Joshua said. 'All light, Lord, I've finished with tbat bunob,' and tbe Lord said to the sun, 'Go on now, You can go to bed.' " "If there is anything I abhor it is tbis 52 times a year proposition. A lot of people will bang their hair, penoil their eyebrows, put on their best bib and tuoker and go to churoh every Sunday and go to hell the rest of tbe week. God doesn't care bow you are dressed. He don't care whether you come here on borse back or in an automobile or whether you hotfooted it.'? "If there is anything that makes me feel like a woman who bae swallowed a fly it is to hear some one in the dirty saloon business tell me bis business couldn't exist without the votes of ohnroh members. "If you believe tbat you,: descended from a monkey, tbat your great great granddaddy bad a prebentilie tail and bung from a tree and threw oocoanuts at bis neighbors, all right. I don't objeot, but don't try to connect me with any of your anoestors." The brewers and saloon ., men and gamblers won't do anything for tbe moral regeneration of your city. If any one is going to make any sacrifices to that end it must be tbe cburob members. Out of a congregation like this we ought to get $1000 or $1500. but if we do I'll eat my bat."
