'.908 Soious of uobility make two appeals to the American woman. As a rule, they understand better than the Amer ican man the outward accomplishments of social life, for sooial life in Europe, especially among tbe npper classes is more like an exclusive profession. But the stronger force is the sooial pres tige which attends family and title. The tremendous difference between high and low classes, attached to which is an unquestioning deference from low to high, as flattering as it is strange to American experience, is fascinating to a woman who baa once been across to see it. Ibis conntry annexed a lot of un founded rumors when she gathered in the Hawaiian Islands. The man who baa a dimpled dearest baby to dance upon bis knee seldom woriies much abont posterity. SENATE IS AGAINST PEOPLE. This is the season when the profess ional crop killera get in their doadiy work. It ia assuredly an optimistio outlook when the speculator cannot conjure up some dire calamity with which to smite the growing grain of tbis country. It is notable, however that the greater the distance from the manipulative markets the less suscept ible is the harvest to annihilation. Possibly tbis is one of the reasons for unfailing crops in the Paoiflo North west. Let us be wary bow we extend the glad band to the grain gamblers. West Coast Trade. There is no denying the exoellent organization of the Democrats in Union and Wallowa counties. They did not make much noise prior to elec tion day, but at that time were at the polls, shoulder to shoulder, and the result shows tho effect; of the good work done. Good generalship is com- moudable iu any quarter, says tho Union Eeputliouu. A Chicago waiter baa become rich euougb by saving bis "tips" to retire from business. Representatives of predatory wealth will refuse however, to regard him with admiration beoause he considers a mere hundred thousand dollars as a competency. For every warship that Germany builds Euglaud will build two. Brit annia has been ruling the waves for some years, now, and intends to keep the job nutil the cows oome borne. The report that cornea from Wash ington that most of the senators, the senate as a whole, do not like the Ore gon way of eleoting senators, is soaroely in the nature of news. It has long beeu known that a majority of the senate was opposed to the election of senators by direot vote of the people. Repeatedly tbe bouse has passed a res olution proposing this as a constitu tional amendment, but it bas always been voted down or ignored by tbe senate. Tbe reason is plain, and it is one that should strengthen tbe resolution of tbe people of Oregon to bold on o tbis new power and impel tbe people of other states to follow Oregon's ex ample. The reason ia simply tbis Tbe senate is not representative of tbe people, and knows it. Worse, it does not intend or desire to be so. It is representative chiefly of large special interests railroads, express com punies, Standard Oil, the steel trust, tbe sugar and tobacoo trusts, and so on and so not only cannot represent the people generally, but on numerous oo oasions and indeed as a rule, represents those who seek to impose upon and op press the people. ma uregon system would soon revolutionize tbe senate and tbe mem bers ot that body well know tbis fact, Most of tbem would have to go. Their name would be Iobabod. Some few youuger members who would really like to serve tbe whole people and make some almost apologetio efloils to do so, like Beveridge, Dolliver, and Borab would probably be retained, but with tbe Oregon system in vogue throughout the country there would be an overturning, all the wav from Massachusetts to Oalifornia. Tbe senate would not unseat Cham berlain, because it would not bave tbe slightest foundation upon wbiob to stand in doing so. He will bave been duty elected ty the legislature, striotlv in aooordauoe with the constitution. To say that he shall be kept out be cause tbe legislature iu eleoting bim obeyed tbe wish of the people of the state, when the right of no one who baa notoriously seonred bis seat by bribery ia questioned, would be too hideous a joke for even tbe senate to perpetrate. Thiuk of Piatt, Hopkins and Guggenheim voting against seat ing (Jnamberlain beoause he was elec ted by both the people and tbe legis lature! The senate, that is tbe majority as controlled by its leaders, not only knows it, aud ia afraid of tbem. It doea not trust the people, aud knows that tbe sonate cannot be trusted by the people. Hence, it wants to keep as far away from the people, as far re moved from their power, as possible, and so of course does not like tbe Ore gon elections of tbis June and next January. But it is not likely to go to the extreme of denying Chamberlain his seat. Portland Journal. Ovor at Elleustnrg they are adver tising an auotion sale of "moss backs" and "knookers," to tube plaoe at a Booster club meeting to be held in that city iu tbe near future. THE OKLAHOMA WAY. Soieuoe is resouroef ul if buoktid by money. Pel haps that is why the Thaw experts were aLle to discover a form of insanity just suited to the de fendant's case. Mr. Harrimau has givou 180,000 to assist in the groat work of killing rats iu Shu Franoisoo. What bave the San Frauaisao rats ever done to Mr. Ilatriman? "We pay dearly for our mistakes," observes a contemporary. True, broth er, aud nouo so dearly us those who bave the money and mnrry foreign titles. An Outario muu named Freeze has gone crazy. Why not put bim iu the same coll with Harry Thaw and see wbut happens. A lot of New York men w bo former ly wero lioh thiuk of throwing their million-dollar yaobts ou tbo market. Save your pennies and buy a yaoht. A Cleveland preacher advises people not to get married until they feel that they will die if they don't. But nearly everybody doea feel that way. A Pittsburg paper says that Count Boni is game to tho core. Why not say to the yellow? Bad eggs do uot bave cores. Before we start any more legal holi days iu this country we should leant to keep safe aud sane those we now bave. Our English cousins pronounce St. John "Sinjio." Is St. James ,;S3in-jims?" A New York girl who ran away from home says she ran away to learn wing. Plain or wild oats? Tbe following report ou an Oklaho ma bank failure shows tbe way they do things iu that new commonwealth: The International Bank of Colgate was reported to tbe bank oommis sioner by one of its examiners a few duysugo for violatiug the banking law of the state, particularly iu its man aging oftloors borrowing from tbe de positors' money. Tbe bank commissioner at once visi ted the bauk iu person aud found that the total deposits were about $31,000. of which the president, L. A. Connors. owed over ftiOOO, aud the cashier, L, Elzy, owed over $1000 in other words about 80 per oent of the deposits had been borrowed by the two niauaeiuo ornoeis. ine bauk commissioner de mauded thut they immediately replace tne money. Tdey failed to do so. He closed tbe bank at 3:15 Thursday eve- mug; telephoned tbe state banking board; received instructions toimmed lately prooeed to pay all approved de posits. In 42 miuutes from the closing of the bauk tbe bauk commissioner was ready to pay approved deposits. By Fiiday evening 00 per oent of the dopositois had appeared, proved their olaiuis and received their money. By tbe end of tbe second day 00 per cent of all deposits had beeu paid. A few depositors who lived in tbe coun try don t seem to be in any hurry aoouc drawing their deposits. Oue farmer is reported aa answering over the rural telephone that he is too busy to oome after his niouey, but will waut it iu a week or so. Iu the meautimo both the presideut aud the cashier bave boou arrested for tbe violation of tbe state banking law, uud are hold under heavy boud. "There will probably be no loss "to tbe state guaranty fund, aud no assess ment required on other banks. Liqui dation will likely reimburse tbe state fund within 30 days. The loss will probably not exoeed the capital stook." A DESERT SANDSTORM. Experience of a Wo- Traveler While Crossing,- .ura. ' What it means to encounter a sand storm In tbe desert of Sahara is de scribed by Mrs. Palmer Thomas: "Few things bring such a sense of utter powerlessness as a desert sandstorm, and I shall never forget my experience of one. Our dragoman one day sudden ly called our attention to a darkening horizon line. 'See,' be said; 'sandstorm comes. No man will ride in such. We had barely time to dismount and make the camels kneel In a circle on the sand before tbe storm was upon us. Each man threw his kaftan over tbe peaks of his saddle and crouched with in tbe shelter it afforded and that formed by tbe .animal's body behind him, while I nestled in tbe hollow formed by my camel's neck and shoul der, drawing tbe folds of tbe blanket like stuff tightly over me. Tbe wise beast, knowing what was coming, turned her long neck right round and laid ber head on my knees, seeking tbe protection of my cloak for her eyes against the sand, whicb, driven by tbe fury of tbe wind, struck tbe face like powdered glass. "But I looked out upou the scene na long as I could, watching what appear ed to be a mass of brown gauze veils streaming up across the sky, darkening the sunlight and gradually blotting out everything from our sight An icy wind preceded the cloud, increasing In intensity every minute until tbe sound of its roaring made one's own voice inaudible, while the darkness became that of densest night. And so we sat silent in tbe noise and the blackness until the hurricane abated. Then, look lng out again, I saw the brownish mass of cloud flying before the wind away toward the Nile, some forty miles distant, and the cloudless blue of a March sky in Egypt once more over spread above ns. "But tbe legs of our beasts were ah covered with the sand that had fallen, and notwithstanding my sheltered po sition the sand was lying on my dress and hat and was thick upon us. For some time we watched the brown cloud losing itself in the immensity of the desert, where the whitening bones of animals tell with sad frequency of the overwhelming fury of these sud den tempests; then we mounted and rode away." While cruising in the south seas the whaler Essex on Nov. 20, 1S20, was fu riously attacked by a cow sperm whale supposed to have been the mother of a calf which had Just been harpooned. The whale had not been wounded her self, and her attack was very deter mined. At her first rush sha passed under the Essex and carried away a great length of her false keel. Then, coming to the surface a considerable distance away, she appeared to take bearings and deliberately charged the vessel again, ramming her with such violence that she stove in the bows, while tbe ship rolled so heavily that the captain thought she must be dis mantled. The case is memorable be cause the crew had to abandon the vessel, and oue boat was never heard of again. A more singular Instance of a whale attacking a vessel occurred in 1805. The singularity lies in the fact that In the case of the Handa Isle the attack was entirely unprovoked. This vessel, a brlgantlue of 2G0 tons, was on her way to Syduey with a cargo of timber, On Aug. 24, about noon, a couple of sperm whales rose very close to the vessel and, while the crew watched them "sporting" across her bows, the pair suddenly slued around and came straight for her. One thought better of it and dived below the Uanda Isle. The other struck her fair and square on the beam, crushing in ber timbers. Ilaving rammed the ship in this reso lute fashion It sheered off, terribly damaged about the head, and present ly sank tail first Fortunately there were some pack ages of rawhides on board, and the crew were able to keep the vessel afloat with the pumps until a rough and ready collision mat had been fash ioned out of these and drawn over the leak. Ballea Magazine. LOW RATES Women of the Kurds. As to the way the Kurds treat their women, an Asiatic traveler says: "They neither veil them nor impose upon them heavy manual labor. Their women are well clothed and are free to ride abroad, bully their husbands and express their opinion in public af fairs with as loud a voice as any suf fragist could desire. To see a woman of sixty upright as a lance and with a good figure is not uncommon, and that; I think, is a sufficiently striking testimony to any one acquainted with the east" A Practical Letter. There has recently been an outcry against the deterioration in modern letter writing, but the following epis tolary triumph from a tailor has lev eled things up. "I have today issued a writ against you," wrote a tailor whose letter was produced in the Westminster county court, "for the amount of your bill. Trusting for a continuance of your es teemed favor, I remain." etc. London Globe. A Business Matter. She Here is your engagement ring, Henri. I cannot marry you; I love an other. He What Is his name?
