Kemp and daughter, Luoile, were the guests of Pendleton friends Wednesday. Mies Lula Tharp spent tne week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Ger king west of town. Mrs. A. L. Douglas was over from Weston this week visiting at the home of her son, Arthnr. . Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sohmidt weut to Walla Walla Tuesday by auto, and visited friends there. Mrs. Luedtke arrived home Saturday from the hospital at College Plaoe, niuoh improved in health. Miss Eva Rider, manager for the looal telephone offloe, spent a portion of last week in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Butterfleld, of Union, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Miller in this city. Ihe Misses Aloy and Nellie Fobs and Miss MoDonald are visiting relatives and friends in Moro this week. . - B. B. Biobards, jnstioe of the peace, is expeoted to arrive home soon from his visit to Willamette valley points. A. M. Gillis returned to his home near Wasbtuona yesterday, after spend ing several days in Athena on business. Dr. J. D. Plamondon and H. A. Barrett drove to Walla Walla yester day and witnessed the antomobile raoes. A. B. MoEwen, wbo was seriously ill last week with pnenmonia, is now doing nicely and is on the road to re covery. Many of the Atbena yonng people visited Meador Park Sunday and wit nessed the ball game between Athena and Milton. Y Earl Saunders the popular old-time 'Yellow Kid pitober, was married re oently to a young lady in the Willam ette valley. York Dell and Bert Carta do are in Portland this week, where they are delegates to the Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge. Cass Cannon has received word of bis father's death, wbioh occurred at the old home in Harrison county, Ohio, on the 8th inst. Mrs. F. S. Le Grow went to Walla Walla Wednesday eveinng, where she attended the wedding of her friend, Miss Mabelle Hunt . Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Colbern, Mrs. Theo. Daoner and Mrs. Wall attended tbe Christian oburoh convention in Walla Walla this week. Miss Stella Jaokson was in Pendleton this week. Miss Jaokson is expecting a sister, and other friends kto arrive from the east, who will visit here for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Whitlook entertained a number of friends at their borne in this oity, Wednesday evening. Musio was a feature of entertainment and refreshment were served. An incipient blaze on tbe roof of the O. R. & N. depot oalled out the fire de partment yesterday afternoon. Sparks from a passing engine ignited the roof. But little damage resulted. Mrs. Wm. Tompkins and daughters Mrs. Arthur Coppook and Miss Lill ian, spent the past week at Two Bivers. on tbe Snake river, at tbe home of Mr. and Mrs. James Woodruff. vBoy Tompkins arrived home Wed nesday from Corvallis, where be at tends the Oregon Agricultural college, and will spend his vaoation on the Tompkins farm northwest of town. . Frank Knowlton and wife have re oently moved from Newport, Wash., to a fruit farm near Wenatobee. Their daughter, Maud, Was married last week, and will reside in Newport. X New names have been given stations on the Northern Paciflo between Atbena and Wallula. Grand View has been changed to Wayland, Killian to Smeltz and Canon will hereafter bear the name of Ring. , br. Plamondon was oalled to the Mjor Cornoyer home, south of town Monday of this week. The Major's health is not the best that, oould be wished for, and bis many friends hope to hear of improvement. 1 George Hewitt of Helix, while in toxioated at Pendleton Monday night, allowed a "friend" to put him to bed. Tuesday morniug when George arose to take a train to La Grande, he fonnd a $300 roll of greenbacks missing. Miss Baker, deaooness of tbe Spo kane hospital, who visited Athena re oently, will leoture in Helix and Adams, June 24 and 25, on "The Mis sion of Doroas. J. Parker. Mr. MoClain is bale and hearty and bears the burden of his 83 years lightly. H. H. Hill left the first of the week for tbe Yakima oountry, where be has property interests. He expects to dis pose of bis holdings at Sunnyside and invest in more property in Toppenisb, wnion be regards as the ooming oity of that region. He will be away about two weeks. Hon. E. F. Watson, one of tbe lead ing members of tbe North Carolina bar, was the guest this week, of At torney S. F. Wilson, an old friend. Mr. Watson is a delegate to the Demo ortio National convention at Denver, and in the interim will visit important points on the Coast. Tbe telephone company is making improvements in the looal central office. An automatio pole change, which does away with the arm break ing generator has been installed and other ohanges for convenience will be made. . Five new desk phones have been ordered by local natrons. VMrs. G. C. Osburn held an informal reception at the borne of Mrs. Fred Boyd Saturday afternoon, to a few of her Atbena friends. Sunday she went out to the country borne of her broth er, Mark Brandon, and Wednesday proceeded to ner home in La Grande after a seven weoks' tour of the East ern states. Mrs. Osburn can talk en tertainingly of her Eastern travels, and gave a delightful afternoon Sat nrday to her friends. Miss Nettie Cannon, teaoher in the Walla. Walla public schools, came over from there Friday and spent sev eral days at tbe home of her uncle, Cass Cannon near town. She left Tuesday for Franklin county, where she will spend her summer's vaoation on ber homestead. ,7 Five more McRea combines were yOelivered to buyers in Athena this week. The property covered by tbe mortgage consists of an automobile and a lot of Mler skates. Mann bought tbe automobile of the dootor, paying $300 oasb, and secured balanoe by giving' the mort gage. YMiss Ada Ely was over from Weston Saturday making her Athena friends a farewell visit Miss Ely left Monday for Boise, Idaho, where she will spend the summer and perhaps remain (per manently with her brother, Walter Ely and wife. . Frank preoeded her, and both will make their home in Boise. '. , " ; N The warm weather disclosed the faot that Atbena was consuming more water than the gravity system oould supply and the water commissioners were compelled to employ a man at tbe pumping station. The pumping plant will be utilized until such time as sufficient rain oomes to replenish the the gravity system supply. VMiss Sylva MoDonald, wh? has been visiting for several weeks with, friends here, left Tuesday for Walla Walla, where she will visit before returning to her home near Pullman, Wash. She was aoompanied as far as tbe Garden city by Misses Irene Dudley and Edna Taylor, wbo visited at the D. McDonald home there.. The members of the Christian oburoh Bible sobool are today enjoy ing a pionio at Krebs grove near Ad ams. Teams were furnished every body and tbe crowd gathered at tbe church, leaving there about 8 this morning. Games and entertainment were provided and a bounteous lunoh was served at noon in the grove. JDuriug the last week D. B. Jarman, fae well known merchant of Athena and Weston has bought and shipped eight carloads of Weston mountain potatoes. Tbe shipments were made to Seattle and were loaded on North ern PaoiQo cars in this oity. Mrs. James Fitzpatrick, nee A ret a Saunders, lies in St. Vincent's hospital iu Portland, having undergone a surg ical operation for appeudioitis and other serious complications. Mrs. Fitzpatrick 'a present, home is iu Los tine, Wallowa county.' She has been in the hospital for several weeks, and is attended by ber husband and moth er. She was doing nioely when visited reoently by Athena friends. While spring . weather offerings have not been conduoive to good wheat growing, the rose , tush hath flourished like a green bay tree, and Athena's crop of roses is the finest and most prolifio in the town's history. Gorgeous boquets of these oboioe flowers are now as common in Atbena as they are in the Rose City. Mrs. Plamondon and Mrs, Mansfield have an espeoially fine collection of choice varieties, and many other Atbena homes aro beautified , with rosea in profusion. General Dewet, the big stallion owned by tbe Belgian Horse Co., of Atbena, died Monday at Alex Moln tyre's idace after a short illness of four bo ars. It developed that ihe horse died as the result of a ruptured stom aoh. The animal was valued at (1000 and the company owning him carried 11000 insurance. The horse wieghed 2200 pounds and was considered one of the best draft stallions in tbe North west. The Belgian Hone company is oom posed of Athena stockmen and farmers. W. B. Taylor is president, and Henry Barrett, secretary. ' V. E. Hoven went over to Walla Walla this week and attended tbe con vention of tbe Cb arches of Christ held in that city from Tuesday till Thurs day. Mr. Hoven will preach bis last sermons in this city next Sunday morning and evening, leaving for Tur ner, Monday when) tbe annual con vention of the cburohes is held each year.
