A STUNNING G1E I Athena and Adan-B, Evenly Match ed Played Before a Big Crowd Sunday Afternoon. A better game of ball was played iu Atbena Sunday than-tbe excursionists wituessed at Meador Paik, Walla Walla. The Adams and Atbena teams were evenly matched and dating tbe whole nine innings it was anybody's game and a tossnp which team would win ont. Bat when Captain Dudley kinked bis finger at David McStone, tbat stolwait yoang Irishman toyed with a horseshoe in bis pocket and stepped in to the pitcher's box, and it wasn't, in the cords for Adams to win. Tbe Shamrocks gave him perfeot support, oud the boys from Hngb Eobie's town fnuud him for only tbiee safe bits, one of wbicb was a 2-baggor, stnug ty Dr. Fred Lienallen's wicked willow. Aud tbe dootor pitobed some ball himself. He had good coutrol with men on bases, bat be was found at op portune times for an aggregate of eight bits, four of wbiob were of the juicy 2-station variety. Adams was tbe first to soore. The ran was made iu tbe tbird inning. Owens punched a safe one into right field and purloined second. Dr. Lieu alien found one to his liking and pushed ituway from him for two bases, Owens scoring. Athena came back likewise in fourth and registered twice. Mr. O'Willaby patiently waited for four balls. His "Umps." Mr. MoIIawks, gave him his duo and tbe crowd rooted. Thou Mr. MoDudley shoved a single into right gardeu. Bonny Gross, the only Databmuu on tbe teuin gallantly ploased tbe fair sex when be neatly placed a 2-base bit, scoring O'Willaby and MoDudley. A moment later be was nipped, trying to steul tbird. La Brasche, found Lieuallen for a 2-base hit but died ou second, wbeu Sanders f auued. O'Bell ended tbe run-getting iu tbo fifth, when be made the cirouit on a single by O'Willaby, stealing seo ond aud scoiiug ou errors by errors oy uwens and Wilson Morisotte scored for Adams iu the fifth. Jivcrffla C. C. 'a tut! drugtiU refuuU nwiun sc In Spite of Increased Salaries Peda gogues Are Going Into Other Work. The schools in Umatilla ooanty are faoiug a famine in competent teachers for the next sobool year. -Each dis trict hag been forced to raise its teach ers' salaries, without exception, ftom Dve to ten dollars per month. Yester day a contract was signed and regis tered, providing for tbe set vices of P. M. Nash iu tbe Pilot Bock schools xor tbe ensuing year. Tbe new contract calls for 85 per month. "Tbe'membera of tbe school board are making tbe inorease in tbe salaries of tbe teachers simply because tbey are forced to do so to keep the teach ers." said Supt. Frank Welles iu oom mnntinG' on tbe increases tbat are constantlv being registered in the sal aries of tbe pedagogues. "The sobools of Umatilla county are going to lose many good teachers this year in spite of tbe advauces. Tbe assistant prin cipal at Athena, and the ptinoipal at Weston both sever their couneotions with schools this year. Both men have better offers in other flelds of activity. "But tbe resignations are by no nieaus limited to the male teachers. We are losiug some of the most able teaobers tbis year who are to become wives. That is the greatest problem, matrimony. -Young women will mar ry in spite of the salary temptations; men will generally stay another year at least. "Tbe difficult part of tbo situation, however, is not so muoh that we ore losiug many of tbe teachers as tbat we have no way of filling the depleted ranks with qualified instructors. Good sohool teaobers are at a premium. Huudteds of sohool teachers could be used to advantage in tbe schools of oastorn Oregon next year without the slightest plethora in toe staffs. For merly there have been many teachers from tho east who came west to seoure tbo better salaries tbat we offered, but tbe eastern states have been forced to meet our offers, and the supply is out off. The danghtors of tbe western peoplo seem to hesitate to enter school work. For one thing, so many of them have fathers tbat are independ ent tbat tbey feel tbat there is little necessity for them to toil to make a living. However, many of our very best toaobers are western bred and ed ucated girls. "Unless some unforeseen relief comes I fear that many sohools in the rural districts will be forced to close their doors owing to our inability to got competent teaobers. Of course, there will be no difficulty during the re mainder of the present sohool year although soveral have resigued to take effect at once. But the future looks oloudy for tbe small country schools, where tbe districts are unable to pay the salaiies tbat teachers now de maud." Handle the Apple Yield. At a meetinc of the Hood River Apple Growers' uuiou held yesterday, aud largely atteuded, a resolution was tmssod increasing the capital stock of the organization from $2000 to $ 25,000. Tho iuorense is for the purpose ot erecting cold storage facilities to take care of the rapidly iooroasing apple yield of tho valley. Botweeu $5000 and $0000 was subscribed at tbe meet ing within live minutes after the secre tary announced that subscriptions would be received. It is tbe purpose of tho anion to build an addition to its already large warehouse there whioh will contain tbe cold storage plant. Pilot Rock Rural Route.
