Sc. ATHENA. ORE.. APRIL 24 1908 Tbe result of tbe primaries ia a de cided victory for tbe friends and ad berents of Statement No. 1. Tbe election of II. M. Cake over Senator Folton by a substantial majority places the republican party in tbis state on tbe side of tbe people. He is oonoeded to te a clean, strong man, and cbam pioniug a popular principle, comes be fore the voters at tbe Jnne election with tbe substantial support of bis ptirty a candidate for United States Seuator, wboin all probability will be elected. Tbe democrats in tbe several oounties where a'iti statement logisla tive oundidates have been nominated ato casting ahout for available timber to pluoe on tbe tioket. In Umatilla William Blakley will make tbe race, and iudioations are favorable that be will have a seat in the legislature along with Barrett, the republican Statement No. 1 candidate, and vote to coullrm the people's choice for Sen ator, irrespective of whether tbe choice he Cake or Chain berloiu. Holding that tbe testimony given by an applicant for admission to a hone- iloiary order aud for au insurance pol icy, even though aooeptod as to tbe bealtq and habits of tbe upplicaut, if false, does uot bind tbe iusurauce so oiety to tho terms of tbe contract pol icy and operates to repudiate tbe lot tor, tne supreme court, iu au opinion, reverses the case of Marie Stewart Wbigbum, respondent, vs. tbe Su proine Court of tbe Indopendeut Order of Foresters, and rornands tbe case with iustruotious to grant a nonsuit, payir a Salem special. In this cuso William Wbigbatu, who was addicted to drink, duiiug a season of teetota- lieru applied for adimssiou to Pacific Court of F;orentors, of Portlaud, was admitted to membership, took out a beuefiojary certlfloute in favor of his wife, :the respondent, and eveutnnlly died, from the effects of liquor. The 100.00 prire offer made by the Columbia Steel Company of Portlaud, through the Oregon Development Jwgue. for sand testing 03 per cunt pure silica and free from iron oxides, for use in steel manufacturing, excited tremendous interest throughout Ore gon, Washington, California, Idaho and Montana. Hundreds of samples were received. Some of the sand was too fine, some too coarse, the grains of some were too angular, while other samples were, clay or building sand aud not silica at all. Some exception ally promising samples came from the "Iuland Empire," but though niakiug asploudid analysis they failed to make good when put to actual test iu tbe ateol foundry. The piisso money is still waiting for n wiuuer. Wben Seuator George C. Perkius of California, iu a speech reoeutly deliv ered before tbe Uuited States Seuate, ruedn tho statement that Portland har bor afforded a depth of betwoou 19 aud 20 feet, the people of the great Colum bia River Basin aud all those of the Pacific Northwest were astouished. Tho most thorough compilation of tbe shipping of 1007 from this port shows uumeions vessels with draft ranging from 25 to 23.0 feet, and very large uumber averaging iu excess of 21 feet. Tbe people of tbe Columbia River Basin do not appreciate tbe misrepre sentation coustautly given the river, and has asked Seuator Perkins to cor Pert bis erroneous statement iu the i Senate, but up to this time be baa uot 'r. iuo so. That excellent paper, tbe Dayton, (Wash.) Cbroniole, makes announce ment that it has acquired tbe sterling editorial talent of Rufus Rockwell WilsoD, a New York journalist and au tboi of National reputation. In con junction with bis editorial work on New York's leading papers, Mi. Wil son found time to write several well known books, among which are bis "Rambles in Colonial Byways,' "Washington; tbe Capital City and Its Part in the History of tbe Nation," "New York: Old and New. Its Story, Streets and Landmarks," and "Historio Long Island." Tbe Cbron iole, always a good paper, will be made better by Mr. Wilson's associa tion with its corps of intelligent news paper workers. The total cost to the state, aocording to figures complied by Seoretary of State Benson, for the printing, binding aud distribution of tbe pamphlets cod taiuing the title and texts of theiuiti ative and referendum measures, to gether with the affirmative and nega tive arguments for and against same, will amount up to over $15,000 in round numbers. Tbis does not include tbe cost of having tbe questions printed upon the official ballot, which will add a considerable sum to tbis amount. Be a "booster." Throw away that mail order catalogue and come down town and buy (The article of your home merchant. Buy where you can soo tbe artiole and of tbe man who will re turn tbe money if it is not satisfactory, Money spent at home oomos back to you, while mouey that is spent with tho catalogue bouse is forever lost though perhaps you may have a pieoe of shoddy goods to show for tbe money thus spent. Tbe Press reoeived tbe first issue of tho Elgiu Leader. Wbile ueariug ear marks of a good country weekly, tbe Press fails to see wherein any manner the Leader is tbe peer of that other excellent Elgin paper, tbe Recorder. Sizing up tbe conditions of patronage from a distance, the advertising matter oarried in botb papers is uc more than would support properly, one good country paper. Ou the demooratio tioket, there are two good, clean men put up as candi dates for oounty offloes who will re ceive support from voters in all parties "Till" THylor for Sheriff and John Peoller for recorder. Both men are well 'known and will run beet where best kuowu. ' There is a scarcity of school teaob era ana army recruits, but this fact does not seem to bring much oomfort to tbe thousands of aotrosses and aotorsj who are parading np and down tbe Great White Way and eagerly hoping for something to happen. man of herculean mould could have done It A huge politioal machine, with all its ramifications and secret agenoies, sood in his way. It bad ita tentacles in the very vitals of the com monwealth. Aa conrt testimony shows, tbe very officials sworn to up hold the law, secretly blockaded bis progress, and placed bim at enormous disadvantage. A man of less resolu tion would bave been driven from the field ; but that is not Mr. Heney's way. He btayed with tbe ship and the con victions and sentences that resulted show bow urgently Oregon needed a bouse cleaning. It is to tbe very great credit of Mr. Heney, and it ought to be eminently satisfactory to Oregon in tbe moral awakeoing that it left as a sequel. It ought to secure from Mr. Heney a patient hearing and respectful consideration wben be exhorts Oregon people to bitob their publio aims to a higher star. And there is more than tbis in tbe works of Mr. Heney. In bis appeals for tbe people to resist tbe encroaob meets of special privilege, and of boss ism, be brings a ringing message. It is tbe message Roosevelt bas sounded. It is the slogan of La Follette. It is the shibboleth of every apostle of good government. It ought to be tbe watohword of every citizen of tbe re publio. Tyranny is the price, Mr, Heney says, we must pay, if bosses rule and monopolies control, and are not every man, everywhere and every time take all be can get, and, by that token if tbe boss and tbe monopolist gain power are not tbe people certain to be plundered? Whatever men may tbink as to Mr. Heney's obarges against Senator Ful ton, there can be no question that bis clarion warning against corruption, bis appeal for higher citizenship, de serve tbe most thoughtful considera tion. -Journal. Tbe Northern Paoifio railroad com pany bas volunteered to pay to tbe residents of Big Timber, Mont, J 50 cents on the dollar for losses iu the big fire which was caused by a spark from looomotive aud wbiob almost de stroyed the town. Ihe disoussiou as to tbe propriety of womou smoking in publio is growing warm, but it will be a long time be fore we find them joining the meu on tbe rear platforms of the street oars with a cigarette between their teeth. Dowu iu Douglas oounty, C. S. Jack- sou, a representative in the last legis lature, dooliued to agree to vote for tho people's choioe for senator, and will be left at home, while a mau who did so agree was eleoted. Reports from over the state warrant the assertion that tbe largest crop of fruit aud grain will be harvested tbis year iu the history of the state. A restaurant man has failed with assets of some $2,000 and liabilities of about $200,000. Probably hia creditors are iu a stew. At tbe June election the proposed aiueudinent to our State Coustitutiou wilt be voted upon and probably adoptod, by whioh the Juatioes of tbe Supreme Conrt will be iuoreaaed from three to five, and the two additional justices will be selected at the No vember electiou. At a meeting of the Demooratio State Central Committee, held In Portlaud, Jauuary 18, 1908, by a unanimous vote a resolution was adopted deolarlug iu favor or making the Judiciary of the State nonpartisan, thereby carrying out the plan initiated by reference ti their qualification, re gardless of their politioal affiliations. In tniupliance with tbis resolution democrats voted for Robert S. Bean, the republioau oaudidate, at tbe pri mary election. HENEYISM. Opinions will .differ as to the ac cusations brought by Mr. Heney against Seuator Fnltou. They ought not to differ over tbe merits of Heuey ism. Seuator Fultou's friends scoru tbe acousations. They ought uot nor, should others, find serious disagree ment with his doctrines. He resents corrupt oitizenship, and would eradi cate it. That ia a virtue for all men to emulate. It is the doctrine that bas made Mr. Roosevelt enormously popular. It is the profession that has made tbe name of La Follette great. It is the t home that bas made the name of Folk known in every home in the laud. If we have commended these things in Roosevelt, La Follette and Folk, why are they not commendable in Mr. Heuey? Mr. Heney not only preaohes, but devotes bis talents to extinction of corrupt citizenship. His service to Oregon in destroying tbe land fraud cabal, and bringing tbe crooks to just ice, bos been extraordinary. Only a POLITICAL INFORMATION Registration opeus for primaries. January 6.
