DelL Miss Kate Nash of La Grande, won the Portand Journal contest in this district and will take the trip to Hon olulu. Miss Mollie Proebstel, of the same town, who was second ;n the race, has been employed by the Jour nal as special correspondent for the paper on the trip. Miss Nash had 188,788 votes and Miss ProeDstel 177, 223, at the close of the contest. At the residence of Mrs. Wm. Mo Bride, tomorrow from 3 p. m. till 7 p. m., Mrs. MoBride and Mrs. Norvell will serve tea. This does not mean simply "tea," alone, but sandwiches, salads, pickles, cake and coffee will enter on the menu, so that you may have a substantial meal, thus saving the trouble of preparing lunch or sup per at home.- Grover Martin, whose 10-year sen tence for manslaughter was affirmed by the supremejcourt, is again in the county jail. The prisoner, accom panied by the bondsmen, went down from Milton Wednesday evening. Yesterday morning an order was is sued by Judge Ellis increasing the amount of the bond to $9,000, and in default of the same young Martin was again placed in jail. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Miller had an exciting runaway while sleigh riding in Weston Wednesday afternoon. One of the single trees dropped, strik ing the horse's heels. Immediately there was something doing. The ocoupants of the sleigh were spilled on the ground and the team, after kioking loose from the cutter, ended up on the poich of the Marshal House. Damage resuted to the harness and sleigh. Ellis of the Baptist church, officiating. After the marriage cere mony, the guests sat down to an ele gant wedding supper. The rooms were decorated in smilax and carna tions. Mr. Robinson is well known in Athena, where for a time he con ducted a Bakery. At present he is driver of the city delivery wagon. His bride arrived in Athena this week from Indiana. Mayberry took down with diphtheria today and the family is quarantined. Mrs. Martin McCnmber of North Fork, was operated on last Tuesday in Walla Walla for appendicitis. The lady is reported to be getting along nicely.. T. L. Childers and Mrs. Laura Wright were married iu Pendleton Deo 27. Both parties are well known and highly respected and have many friends who extend hearty congratu lations. C. E. Brown, editor and publisher of the Eagle was taken down with diphtheria last Tuesday. The disease is finding the gen tleman a rather tough customer, how. ever, as he is getting well rapidly, His little daughter is also recovering. Unexperienced Servant Performs His Duty to the Letter of Instruction. Marcel Prevost, the French novelist, is a favorite in the American colony in Paris, says the Washington Star. "Whenever I see an English bish op," said M. Prevost. at an American dinner party, "I laugh a little to my self, for the good man's stately pres ence reminds me of a terrible mishap that once befell me. "I entertained a certain bishop last year at dinner. My butler, an elderly man, had brought in from a friend's house an inexperienced lad to help him in the dining room, and it seems that this lad, during toe laying of the cloth, annoyed the butler beyond en durance with questions as to his du ties. " 'How shall I hold the plates?' " 'Do I serve the dishes on the right or on the left side of the guests?' 'Must the bishop be served first or second?' "So he continued interminably, and at last the impatient butler said: ' 'AH you will need to do will be to stand behind the bishop's chair, and whenever. Ms lordship puts down his glass you must reach over and wipe his mouth with a napkin.' "That, as the butler' expected, si lenced his assistant. But the young man actually took the butler's ironical remark for a serious order. As soon as dinner began he stationed himself behind the bishop, waited till his lordship had drunk and put down his glass, and then, as deliberately as his nervousness would permit,' he opened out a large napkin and wiped the dig nified old gentleman's mouth.
