A ll communications should be addressed to i PRKS8 Athena, Oregon ATHENA, JANUARY 5, 1906 Senator Dollivar baa introduced a bill in the United States seuatejdesign ing to simplify the railroad rate regu lating measures proposed by the Inter state Commerce Commission. It has not been the intention of the sen ator to introduce the measure until after the holidays, but it was agreed at the conference at the White House, that it would be more effective to have tho matter referred to the senate committee on interstate commerce at once. The bill provides for a thorough inspection of railway ac counts with a view to bringing to light those inequalities which have crept into the business of transporta tion through the greed of influential shipper or through the pressure of competitive conditions. ' President Eliot of Harvard Univers ity, iu a recent speech in Boston, de clared himself opposed to all laws restricting immigration. COTOTES SWIK TBI COLUMBIA. Oregon Irrigator. It will be remembered that nearly two years ago, to be exact on the 18th day of February, 1904, about 1,500 coyotes crossed the river at this point early one morning, a full report of which was published in the Irrigator of the following week. The story of that hegira, as related in our columns, was laughed at by some, scoffed at by others, and some of our contemporaries even hinted that it was a lie. But there has never been any attempt made to disprove oar re port. And had there been we could have at any time proved our words true by showing the very place where they went into the river, the water they swam in and the spot where they landed on the Washington shore. On Thursday morning of last week the Irrigator man was ont of bed very early long before any one else in Ir rigon who bad been in bed that night Hearing a terrible noise down the river we nosed our way through the semi-darkness for about half a mile where we witnessed a curious sight, for the water was alive with coyotes swimming from Washington to Oregon. We made as good a count as we could and are ready and willing to swear that there were at least 6,000 coyotes of alljages, sizes and conditions. As soon as they landed on this side they rolled over a few times in the sand shook themselves, cavorted around a little to get warm and wait for their fellows, and when all were landed they struck off southwest across the desert. We do not think any other person saw them emerge from the river, but it may be that some person or persons on the Washington side saw them start on their nautical journey. However, without any corrobora tion, we publish the story. Those who know us well know we would not tell an untruth for a million coy otes, and those who do not know us are welcome to come to Irrigon and be shown the very identical spot where the varmints landed. BRIGHT PROSPECTS IN SOUTHERN OREGON. Medford Mail Unless all indications are deceptive the year 1906 will be one of unpar alleled growth and development in southern Oregon in general and Jack son county in. particular. Never before has this section at tracted so muoh attention from people of all classes. Miners, orchardmen, lumbermen, all kinds of business men are finding out that the many and varied re sources of southern Oregon offer a field for their energies unsurpassed anywhere. Jackson county is just starting on a steady, upward march toward pros perity, which nothing can stop. Next year will see the miueral seamed hills to the west and south begiu giving up the stored wealth of centuries in greater proportion than ever before. East of us the vast pine aud fir forests will begin paying trib ute and in return a stream of wealth will flow into the pockets of the peo ple.
