Judge tfpton Would Throw Alder man Out and Is Prevented by Police Officers. (juite a sensation was created Tuos duy night at the Walla Walla city oouucil meeting wheu applications were granted for new licenses for throe pluoes whoso licenses were re voked a few weeks ago. George Mot tett made an application, stating he was about to olose a deal for the purchase of the Idle Hour building and fixtures providing a license would be granted. The petition was graut ed, Councilman Kirknian votiug in tho nfllrinative, and receding fiotn his former position. The application by ex-Warden Dry den for a license for the Hotel Louvre was granted ou the same vote. The sensation of the evening was precipitated at the conclusion of re marks by Judge Upton, who was per mitted to address tho council wheu tho ordiunnue prohibiting tho use of all kinds of nickel in tho slot ma chines cnme up. He said that the notion by tho council was not popular with the people, and made a strong ploa in favor of retaining slot ma chines. Judge Upton was followed by his son, who conducts n cigar store. He said the council might do well to in vestigate some of tho push buttous iu the city, and see where tables were covered with money and big poker games played iu many places iu Wal la Walla every night. Councilman Bridges said ho was ready any time to go. If such thiugs were carried ou the council wanted to know it. Yonug Upton retorted:' "If you get otf of First street aud stop shaking bauds with preaohors you might flud something." Mayor Huut wrapped for order. Other words passed when Judge Uptou lost his temper and threatened to throw Couuciluiau Bridges out of the wiudow. The latter jumped to his feet saying: "You are not mau euongh for that." Young Uptou spraug up to assist his father when officers interfered, and prevented a personal enoounter. Later Judge Upton apologized. The ordinance abolishing slot ma chines, to take effect in five days, passed. . Many People Got Left. The Reading, Pa., News, says: There was not a crowded house at the Academy of Musio last night to see "The Girl From Sweden" and in this way many of our theatregoers de ceived themselves, for no more enter taining show has ever dropped into our city this season. Miss Madie De Long, the Swedish dialect comedienne is a whole show iu herself ; but she is so ably supported by the company that they all deserve special mention. Master George, a wonderful child iu the character of "Little Jim," Til lie's Friend, carried his part so well that all were on tip-toe to see him re appear ou the stage. The specialties were flue, aud altogether everybody got their money's worth and some to spare. The attraction will appear at the Athena opera house Monday, Jan. 8. ; New Time Table. The time table which weut into effect ou the O. R. &N. Jau. 1, places Nos. 41 aud 42, the Pendleton-Walla Walla mixed, ou the time that was iu effect previous to putting on the speoial passenger. The time of the O. R. & N. trains now entering this city follows: No. 8 Pussenger, Pendletou to Spokaue, 0:42 a. m. No. 41 Mixed, Walla Walla to Pendleton, 12:80 p. m. No. 7 Passenger, Spokaue to Pen dletou, 4:53 p. m. No. 42 Mixed, Pendleton to Walla Walla, 7 :05 p. m. , Death Defeated Justice. The superior court convenes at North Yakima next Monday. Death has defeated justice" iu two orimiual cases. Dr. Edward J. Hughes, who was awaiting trial for bigamy, hung himself in the conuty jail last month. Black Mustaches, a Yakima Indian, met death last week ou the Noithern Pacific tracks near Toppeuish. He was charged with robbery.
