PAGE BLX ESPERANTOS HAVE A NOVEL ENTERTAINMENT The Grants Pass Esperanto club waB entertained in a novel manner on Monday evening at the home of lira. Edward G. Harris on East A itrejt. Much amusement was occasioned by the efforts of the club members to learn "Clo" (everything), a game In wnlch the participants must speak In Esperanto. A dainty luncheon was served by the hostess, after wbl;u Misses Kimbley and Harris fa- yorad the company with several choir: musical selections. Prrhaps few people In Grants Pas3 ; novv- of this Esperanto club or Us able teacher, Miss Cdla Doerner. Yet In Portland and In other cities of the state It Is known as the only cluo of Its kind In Josephine county. This new language, Esperanto, which It Is hoped may soon become the In strument of communication between all the nations of the world, thereby bringing about "peace on earth, good will towards men," has already secured such a strong hold as to be used by manufacturing flrmB, rail road, hotels, and other business concerns as the most expedient and profitable way of Introducing them selves to other countries. The Port land Commercial club has published a little booklet in Esperanto, set ting forth the attractions, resources and possibilities of our state, and spreading Oregon's fame around the globe. ThlB booklet has brought the club more Inquiries, especially from foreign countries, than any other lit erature they have sent out. There are several Esperanto club in Port land and the language Is being studied In seventeen counties in the state. The fact that the American Congress of Esperantists will meet In the Rose City next June bas help ed to Increase Interest In the study. NEW WAREHOUSE AND FACTORY AT SIDETRACK Appllcntton hns been made for a strip 320 feet along the Southern Pacific right of way on East Fnij street and funning back to the side track of the company adjourning the Ice plant on the cast, upon which Messrs, McKlnstry, Courtney and Ilntr will erect a large warehouse and factory for the manufacture of aH sorts of cement building material. Mention of this enterprise was made some time ago In The Courier. The new factory will be one of the most extensive for the manufacture of all forms of tile, brick stone blocks, curbing, culverts, etc., In this part of the state. The new power tile ma chine that Is now on Us way to Grants Pass f"r this factory Is one of the largest used In any like fac tory on the coaBt and will be run by a 15-horsepower electrt? motor. When the plant Is running at Its full capacity It will employ upwards of 12 men. Though working un der numerous difficulties, the firm Is turning out a largo amount of material at the present time, samples of their foundation blocks on exhibi tion, w ith but three weeks of season ing, made under a pressure of over 10,000 pounds, have almost the in prarance of solid granite. In speaking to a reporter of the future of tho enterprise, It was state! that there Is a largo and growing demand for cement work of this kind on account of the great activity In building circles of the city this spring, Cement Is becoming a popu lar building material In this and other sections, and tho promoters an ticipate and are preparing for heavy run of business, belloving that a Grants Pass product for Grants Tuss people should be a winner. Each enterprise of this sort not only sup plies local needs but helps to give work to those who want it and adds Its quota to a regular payroll, AMERICANS AT ALKXKX) THROW UP BREASTWORKS CM.EXIOO. "It will be only a short time when fruit trees will be blooming, and be fore this time comes all persons own ing, renting or otherwise having oharge of city property, upon which fruit trees, vines and shrubs are growing must have these fruit trees, vines and shrubs sprayed with lime sulphur solution. This Is in accord ance with the horticultural regula tions of this Btate, and is an order given by the district commissioner o' this district. If a tree, vine or shrub is worth having at all, It Is surely worth keeping clean. It is your duty as citizens to observe the sanllaryi laws and regulations, both as to our own health and the health of plants we grow. Fruit trees, vines, rose bushes, etc., must be Bprayed re gardless of their proximity to resi dences or other buildings. If owners feel that the spray will mar the paint on tho buildings, then some arrange ment should bo made to protect the buildings when the Bpraylng Is done. "All spraying must be done by April 7, which Is tho flmlt set fo' owners to have this work done. After that date the Inspectors will either spray or cut down the trees at their discretion and at the owner's ex pense. This decision has been made nnd will be upheld by the district commissioner of horticulture and the county commissioners of the county." NEW HOPE Mr. and Mrs. II. S.
