—Wm. Ward,on upper calamity,
this countv, killed a large bear near
his home a short time since, also
an Indian succeeded in capturing
a bruin that weighed several hun
dred pounds near where the one
was killed by Mr. Ward. Wallace
Capps, in the same neighborhood!
had a rencounter with a very sturdy
bearship some lime since, which
came prowling round at night dis
turbing his rest. Wallace objected
to this, and being without a gun,
gave chase to his hear, while his
wife, though timid as women gener
ally are, braved the dark shadows
of night and went to a neighbors
in quest of a gun to slay his majes
ty, while her husband, robed only
in his night clothes and without
hat or shoes, pursued with an ener
gy seldom equaled and never sur
passed through the brush and
briers the foe to his rest. Finally
his wife returned with gun and a
neighbor; fire from a Winchester
rifle was opened and bullet after
bullet sent into the brush hunting
for a vital part of bruin; al last
when he (bruin) was supposed to
be well weighted down with lead, a
light was procured and Wallace’s
bear proved to be----- well ask
him or his neighbors.
