FORESTRY AND SURVANT FIRES. Millions of dollars are lost annu ally through the destruction of western timber by fire. That such loss may be prevented entirely is not to be imagined. That fire dam uge can be greatly reduced, how ever, under cotnmcrciu! and federal forestry methods different Irom those generally practiced, is uude niable. It is well known that dam- nging forest fires were few and uu important before the advent oi the settler and the later lumber mill with its logging operations. The absence of fires in the years defore the white raau'H coming was not due to the absence ol man from the timber, but because the old time timber men, the Indians, un derstood the proper use of fire ns a forest conservative. Such is the gist of the article ap pearing elsewhere in this paper, whose pnrpose is to point out .the vast importance ol fire as a servant in man's forest regulation, thereby preventing its destructive domi uance as a master. According to the author (and we believe the tacts bear out his allegations) the total neglect of this important preservative lunction of fire on the part of our national foresters is responsible for much ol the fire loss in our reserves. The Indians preserved their for ests with fire. They appear to have been better conservationists than the officials of today. Cer tainly it is rather futile to lock our forests up in "national domain" if when there they are not to be pro tected properly. The divorce colony at Reno must have boomed considerably since the Culifnruian liubernutorial frown scut the Dig Mill from that state into more appreciative Nevada Certainly it will be n convenience for would-be divorcees, serving' their term of legal residency betore the sacred bonds nre severed, to have such n notable diversion ns a world's chnmpiouship scrap to divert their minus from their marital troubles Aud by the way, will Jeff be di vorced from the coveted bell? without number, occurred Mrs. Schtilu being hostess. next, QAY PAWTIES UP RIVER. Water Superintendent Saxtonof linker City, Imii a ood sited class before him at I.uldlnw last week. J. K. Winner nnd Charles Spnugh were Quite clearly there is "something doing" in tue Ueschutes railroad field. And if a guess may be haz arded iu a matter of such uncer tainty it appears fairly certain that the next crop of "doings" will em anate from the Harriman camp. Both the recent action of the Hill people in withdrawing construction work south of this point, after hav ing gone to great expense iu inaug crating it, the presence of so many of the Harriman leaders here primed with "satiable curiosity," and the fact that a common trackage agree ment at points further north has "been entered into, strongty lead to the" belief that other non-compete-tive agreements are in the air. Such, for instance, as a division of territory and track-building. We .would not be surprised, indeed, to see the Hill interests build from the Columbia to Bend exclusively and from Bend eastward, and the Har riman road continue the north and south line from here to connect with its Natron cut-off and California. This would appear a program de voutly to be wished for. Folks in Germany Land, where the lager beer flows, folks have ac quired an impressive head start over us plodders of Central Oregon While we are awaiting the coming of the railroads xhe Kaiser's people are enjoying air-ship travel. Count Zeppelins' successful inauguration of commercial aerial navigation truly marks an epoch whose results are as problematical as they are far- reaching. Aside from the serious aspects of the new order of things, there arc plausible possibilities not devoid of interest even to those who sever nope to afford sky autos. If Germans are to be the exclusive bavenly chaffeurs, will it not be incumbent upon poor earth-abiding citizens to carry steel umbiellaS to ward off falling empty beer bottles and other trifles? And how about air-sickness will it prove as una tractive as seasickness? Redmond's little play for pub licity, which the Madras Pioneer characterizes as "diabolical" might better be .styled an excel lently well conceived if somewhat humorous plan for selling lots. The sad part of it is the heart-rending slight given Beiid; the line of the proposed county of which Red mond is tne proposed Hub and Heart and (shall wc say it?) Brains, comes to within but five miles ol Bend. Surely this is the uu kindest cut of all. Would it not wave oeeu mure considerate to, naye included Lytic, or part of our own city at least, iu the phantastic county of Deschutes? In short, Bend is hurt irreparably cut by this unmerited neglect. STAR BAKERY FRESH BREAD Pies, Pastries and Cake. :: Meals Served at Regular Hours. E.
