The Jo n g tables were beautifully decorated ^ ith Oregon grape and carnations and under the electric lights made a bright and cheery ap pearance, . Jones spoke on “ Newberg from an Educational Standpoint” citing the advan tages offered in our efficient pub lic school, the high school and in Pacific College for educating the young, and spoke of the loyal -spirit shown by the business men and citizens generally in support ing these institutions. F . A. Morris, who was intro duced as the first mayor of New berg, read a short paper on •“ Reminiscences vs. Present” in whkh he dwelt more particular ly on the conditions-of Newberg during the early formative peri od which was particularly in teresting to those who were ac quainted with-the occurrences. J. C. Poster and the feasting over the six course dinner began, which with the chatting and vis iting with elbow neighbors lasted for tw o hours or more, following which, Senator Caldwell, the ’toastm aster introduced M ayor Harrold who responded to the to a st “ Newberg’s Needs.” He atated th at when he came west from Chicago a few years ago his objective point was the state ot Washington, but th a t became on into Oregon, for which he had never been sorry, and then on to Newberg where he located, and for this he had no regrets, but be pointed out th a t we needed more and better unity of action, more good business buildings and ■more graveled streets. During the past season street* had been graveled for a distance of forty blocks and the city council hoped to do even better th e coming year.
