Over a t Silverton t w o minis ters o f the gospel met in a public hall and debated the question o f “ B a p tism ,” p r o and con, before an audience of 100 0 people w h o cheered the speakers lustily—and then w ent a w a y , as the report goes, w ith the same Opinions they held before hearing th e dis cussion. There is evidently room fo r m issionary w ork w ith ou t seeking a foreign held, even a m on g those w h o are supposed t o c a rry the gospel t o the peo- a w* em ploym ent o f a principal for the public sch ool for next year, but since the tim e is near a t hand when the m atter w ill be up for consideration w e have n o hesi tan cy in sayin g th a t w e believe th a t the best interests of the sch ool will dem and the 1 election o f the present principal, R. W. K irk, Who has proven his fitness for the p osition by som e eight years o f contin u ou s service as principal. F ew men have the happy faculty of governing a sch ool well w ith so little fric tion, w hich is a fa c to r well w o rth considering in a sch ool o f six t o seven hundred pupils and' tw elve t o filteen teachers. An exam ination o f the building from basem ent t o garret w ill scarcely reveal a m ark o f any kind, w hich is sim ply a pointer t o sh ow his efficient ability t o direct the pu pils a lon g proper lines o f self governm ent. As a teacher, Prin cipal K irk ranks high in the state a m on g educators, and he w ill have n o trouble t o secure a g p o d p osition elsewhere, and the G raphic does n ot k n ow th at he desires t o remain, but N ew berg ca n ’t afford t o lose him and we believe this is the sentiment of the people generally. In a few years the occupants o f such houses are liable t o be w onder in g w h y they are having diph theria and fever and w h y the house is settling d ow n . Dry rot in w o o d makes a building ex< trem ely unsanitary and this is sure t o fo llo w where there is n ot a free circulation o f air through the foundation walls. Carpen ters and builders w h o have had experience k n ow this t o be true and the w onder is that there is s o little attention paid t o proper ventilation in planning buildings. Such an oversight places the builder in the same class w ith the »man in history w h o builded his house on a sandy foundation.
