Last week at Salem, Representative Poorman had John Gates, assistant jani tor at the state capital, arrested for ab- ecounding with $1500 that Poorman gave him. At the examination he was dis charged, no one appearing against him. Peach-growers of Catawba island, O., have formed a combination to fight the San Jose scale, which has been destroy ingpeach orchards in that country.
