A $1500 Puzzle.
Last week at Salem, Representative
Poorman had John Gates, assistant jani
tor at the state capital, arrested for ab-
ecounding with $1500 that Poorman gave
him. At the examination he was dis
charged, no one appearing against him.
The Corvallis Times says of the affair:
The mas Cooper, who came up from
Salem Thursdav night, was familiar with
the facts in the above. The money he
•ays was given to Gates by Representa
tive Poorman. The Corbett men sav it
was given Gates by Poorman to bo used
in the fight of the sein fisherman against
the traps on the Columbia. The opposi
tion supporters say it was given for use
in promoting the Corbett candidacy.
Senator Booth of Lane, an anti-Corbett
senator, after Gates’ arrest, spent the
night with him in jail, and is reported
to have secured a full confession of what
the money was to be used for. This re
port bad not however, been confirmed
when Mr. Cooper left Salem.
After he not the money, Gates went to
Portland. There be spent some of the
money, and when arrested at Albany
was on his way out of the county. Gates

firmatory of the demands made by the
ministers as follows:
