Claiming that the practice of scat­
tering poiaon baits, indulged in by
paid hunters of the Biological Survey
was becoming increasingly intolerable
and that it was being used indiscrim­
inately, doing far more harm than
good and threatening the wholesale
destruction of several
important
species of our mammals as well as
wreaking destruction amongst fur­
boaring animals and dogs, one hun­
dred and forty-two of the leading ex­
perts on American Fauna, including
scientists on the staffs of the largest
museums and natural history and re­
search intsitutions in the U. 8. have
signed a protest against the uae of
poison bait. They include directors
and curators of California Academy
of Sciences; Chicago Field Museum
of Natural History; American Muse­
um of Natural History; New York
Zoological Society; University of Cal­
ifornia; the biological scientists at the
University of Michigan, John Hopkins
Medical School, Luther College and
dozens of others. The writer who has
been fighting the poiaon bait menace
for years is naturally very enthused
at seeing this protest signed by the
best versed people an the subject in
ths U. 8.

fellows who haunt your back yards

crumbs thrown them during the hard
winter months, do not follow “Old
Man Winter” about the globe aa some
people believe.
While they are seldom in evidence
in the lowlands and valleys after the
winter months have passed they may
be found at higher elevations during
every month of the year. It is there
that they nest and hatcli. The young
when permitted to leave their nests
are almost as large as the mother
bird, who la kept busy shoving food
into their mouths aa they follow her
about emitting a continuous cry for
more. They are entirely helpless
shout rustling their own food for sev­
eral days after being able to fly.

Careful jirfestigation before invest­
ment in burial certificates now said to
be offered in Yamhill county, was
urged today in a statement, received
from Robert M. Mount, manager of
the Portland Better bureau.
Salesmen are said to be operating
in the county, acocrding to Mount, of­
fering certificates for a nominal figure
entitling the holders to funerals on a
cost-plus ten per cent basis, but
Mount says the fault in the plan is

The certificate selling concern is
said to offer the prospective investor
a funeral at a reasonable price, usu­
ally on a coat plus ten per cent basis,
provided the prospect puchases a bu­
rial certificate at a figure set by the
company. Prospects are assured that
by, obtainning a large volume of fun­
erals costs may be materially reduced,
Mount delaree.
The company, however, reserves
the right to set the cost figure and
is said to offer cheap funerals at an
actual lots to'.the company during the
first of the sales campaign in order to
procure letters of recommendation and
endorsement.
“The investment plan is well worthy
of careful investigation,” Mr. Mount
declared, “and every prospective pur­
chaser of the certificates is urged to
look carefully into the proposition be­
fore buying.”
“If you are offered a burial corti­
cate of any kind take it to your
banker, an attorney or to a business
friend who has had experience with
contracts and let him examine it and
advise you as to your protection,”
Mount declared.
