As (he WorceHter Hpy Males the cHtw, "The democratic leaden pro pone to 8e to It that a vaat amount of grumbling and lault finding fol lows (he Hag." The demo populUt paiierg are great ly chagrined since the republican convention did not adopt a resolu tion condemning; the Porto Rico tax law. Good reason. The law was adopted and signed before the con vention assembled. The Telephone Ilegittler publishes a long lint of papers that oppose the l'orto llioo tax law. Among the list Is the St. Louli Globe Democrat. The Telephone Register has allowed itaelf to be inK)ed upon In that In stance, and It is probable that other paKrs sustain the administration as well. If we propose holding the Philip pines as acquired territory why de lay giving Ihe Pbilipinos all the rights and privileges of American citizens, exclaims the Salem Inde pendent. We answer for the same reason the natives or Oregon and Washington and Idaho and Montana ami Arizona and all the rest of the natives of American continental ter ritory had not the privileges of the whites who created such prerogatives The strength U'hind W. J. Iiryan is the confidence that the people have iu the man. They believe that he Is sincere, that he is earnest, and that ho will do what he rays. East Ore goninn. liut what does Mr. Bryan promise? Ho spoke here on the 4th Distant anil during the hour he was on the stump, he did not propose singlt' governmental policy, i.ot even free silver. O yes, he id, too. Lie would have the government license the dusts in euch state where they do limine. lint he can safely pro pose that seeing such a thing is im possible It is reported thai Mr. U. W. Htitt at sometime has given utterance to sentiments n Heeling usiu the char actcr of the old soldiers, tnem tiers of the Ureal Army of the Republic. Th Indki kndf.nt has not seen Mr Htitt to learn the truth or falsity of the report but knowing him well and intimately for the past fifteen years, the i.ndm'kndknt will pronounce the tale false. Mr. Stitl whole po litical life Las been spent in voting as (lie soiuters snot, pneir cause h;is Inh'ii his. I lowever suppose the veterans, listening to an idle gossip, should vote MgHinst the republican nominee, in what company will they find themselver? Will they not be with the flag furler? with meu who from 1S01 to the present time have heen ipHHing every measure of the administration, even when Lincoln, and (Jurtleld, and Grant, and Hays, and llnrr.son and now MrKinley have ivnpi-d the- white house? THE GEOUR-iPHY LESSOX. There has been much said by th "Unions" about the republican tic ket being all from the west end ol the county or from Foreet Grove. Now let us aee. Representative Uriggs and Co. commissioner Tod J arelrom Uilley precinct; Haines fi r senator and McNamer for sheriff ate from Forest Grove; J. C. Buchanan for representative la from Cornelius; G. W. Stitt from Beaver ton; John A. Thornburgh for Co. clerk frcm Dairy creek; Cal. Jack Jr, recorder from old West Butte, but now of Keed villi II. A. Ball for supt schools, from East Butte; G II. Wilcox for .ass or: R. Crandall for treasurer and A A. Morrill for surveyor from Hill boro and J. Q. A. Young, hold ovi commissioner from Beaverdam. Tb ticket was nominated by the repu lican convention of 133 delegates. course this ticket doe not fully su that Unlon-demo-pop-Bryan free ail ver candidates. Indeed It was m nominated for that purpose. But while oo this topic let It be aski how far Irom Mr. Hubert Bernard U it to Mr. E. O. Edson's? It has been said by the opposite that lh republican ticket was packet or beforehand made. Let us agai see, Haines was nominated by a eel a matlon. For representative nomln tious there were five ballots taken For Clerk two were taken one belt Irregular and void. For bheriff nil ballots were taken, assessor one, treasurer four and for coroner !w How was It with the union-demo- pop-Bryan Co? Mostly by acclama tion, and when ballot was taken nomination was made at each tin except one. If there are defeaUd aspirants t nominations at the republican con vention who feel agrleved, the In dependent suggests that they read the letter of Hon. Geo. C. Brownell which appears In another col u in and go and do likewise. WHAT IX HETVHX1 Word comes to the Independen that the "Union" candidates are still hunting In every precinct In the county and particularly where tin y have heard that there Is disappoint dent. The candidates say they are ready to admit that without republi can support they do not hope for an election. "We would, like to knew what you republicans can and will do for us." That is well. There can be no denying but that the "Union" candidates would be grateful lor re publican votes. They ought to be, But what do they promise to give republicans In return for these favois? So far they have not proposed to do any th ng. This though Is what they will give. Free silver to begin with anti-expansion, that Is they will uu do all that has been , done by our army in the past two years. They will become cowardly flag lurlers, They will give us foreign free trade so that the laborer will again wear rags and eat at a public soup kitchen If elected these "Union" inemtxrs of the legislature will do what thoy can to cl.ooae a democrat or populist U. S. senator to replace McBrlde Now then is there a republican who cares to undo In a minute what he has been building for a life time? STATE REPUBLICAN PLATPOKM The republican platform of the June election in Oregon Is as follows: "The republicans of Oregon, in convention assembled, reaffirm their belief in and loyalty to tha gold standard. We commend the repub lican congress for its recent logisla tion making the gold standard a part of the statutory law of the land. So long as either of our great political parties advocates the free coinage of silver, the maintenance of the gold standard Is the most important poll Ileal issue, aflecting as it does the value ef the farmer's crop and the laborer's wages. We call upon all who believe in sound money to unite with the republicans of Oregon in Ihe important elections of this year in order that a victory may be won for the gold standard so decisive as for ever to preclude the debasement of our currency by the free coinage of silver. "We heartily indorse the policy of the administration particularly in se curing the Philippine Islands, and demand thai they shall be ret aim d as American territory. We have confidence that the American people without departing from their trad I lions, will give security to personal and property rights, justice, liberty and equality before the law to all who live beneath its flag. "We Indorse the policy of the ad ministration in suppressing the in surrectlon In the Philippines, headed by Agulnaldo, We point with pride to the honorable part played by the Second Oregon regiment In this wsr. They met with victoiy In ever com bat and covered (heir state and coun try with glory on every field. We condole with Ihe families of thorn members of the regiment who lost their lives in the conflict and extend our congratulations to the survivors of the regiment on the brilliant and honorable record they have made. "We regard trade with Ihe Orion- as one of the great sources of our na tional wealth In the future, and an open door in China as an in.portant aid to Ihe growth of our trade in the Orient. We commend Ihe successful efforts of Ihe present administration and especially of Its secretary of state to secure by treaty with the several European powers Ihe right to the ? introduction of American goods Into this great mplre. The republican party In Oregon recognises the vital necessity of con trolofthe organization and curtail ment of the powers of trusts and combinations of capital by the state within Its borders, and pledges its support In Ihe approaching legisla ture to laws defining and carryirg out those objects. "We are in favor of retrenchment and reform in the expenditure of public money; we pledge the repub lican party to favor the enactment of all legislation looking to an economi cal administration of public affairs. "We favor the pending Cons(i(u tional amendment for an increase In (he number of Supreme Court Judges from three to Ave, MWe point with pride to the legis lation adopted by the last legislature. It abolished the railroad commlsblon. It reduced the legal rate of Interest to 6 per cent. It passed an act for the submission to the people of a Constitutional amendment providing for the initiative and referendum. It enacted a protection of the purity of Ihe ballot. As experience demonstrates this (act act to be cumbersome In some parti culars, we pledge the republican leg islature to make effort for its amend ment, to the end that the registra tion of quilifled voters may be facili tated. "We are Unalterably opposed to any measure looking to the leasing of the public domain, believing that such a system would have an un doubted tendency to hasten the con centration of land ownership In Ihe hands of a few individuals and against the long-established Ameri can policy of encouraging home building.
