By so doing Oregon has done what is right by the service men. Not that this implies any special merit, for it was a simple matter of duty, but it would have been a smirch on the state’s escutcheon if it had been turned down. When the call to the col ors was being sounded, and the boys were Hocking to the camps, entraining for overseas and light ing in the trenches, many volu ble anil emphatic assurances were made that Oregon would stand by her own. If they had not been made good, it would have been an everlasting dis grace to the state, and have a bad elfect when another like oc casion arose. While it is true a man should come to his country’s defense without inducement of reward as a patriotic duty, yet this duty is reciprocal, and the country should give recognition to the fact. The time is drawing near when Mr. .lack Dempsey, of the U. S. A. will meet M. G. Carpentier, of France, for the World’s Cham pionship in fistic conmbat. The fate of nations may hang on the issue, and from now on, the sus pense will increase until its set tled. We do not know the exact amount which the winner will re ceive, or the loser as a consola tion prize, but in both cases it dem mstrates that brawn has a much higher market value than the most skilled brains. The Hose Festival is on in Portland, but is not as elaborate as in former years, and not near ly as much publicity has been given to it. Perhaps Portland is conserving its energy for the World’s Fair in 1925. It is a wonder that the U. S. keeps from going into bankrupt cy with the dailv reports of hun dreds of millions of damage done in various parts of the country. “ For you a Hose in Portland Grows.” Big Legion Show June 11th The Portland Post of the Amer ican Legion, on the above date, will stage one of the most thril ling and spectacular exhibitions ever put on in the northwest. Two seventy ton locomotives traveling at the rate of sixty miles per hour, will be sent to destruction on a specially con- strcted track far out in the field, but in full view of the crowds. There will also be girl jocky ra ces, motorcycle races, and best of all a fat man’s Ford race. Band concerts and special events will fill out the afternoon’s pro gram. The show will be staged at the Rose City Speedway, Saturday, June 11th, 1:30 p. m. You can’t afford to miss this great event. General admission will be $1.25. Resolutions of Appreciation At the regular meeting of Carl Douglas Post No. 74, American Legion, held Monday evening, the following resolutions were passed by unanimous vote of the members: Resolved, That a vote of thanks be given Hon. O. D. Eby, of Oregon City, for his very able oration. Resolved, That the Carl Dou glas Post tender a vote of thanks to Upton H. Gibbs, editor of E astern C lackamas N ews , for the publicity given by him in the State Aid Bill for Ex-service Men. Resolved, That a vote of thanks be also tendered to Mayor H. C. Stephens for his efforts on behalf of the same bill. Resolved. That a vote of thanks be extended to Lelia Howe and the school children, also the Burtchett orchestra for their participation in the day’s program. Yeggm an Convicted The trial at Oregon City, of John M. Mebus and James Steele for burglary in Estacada, when Finch’s, Dale’s and Rose’s stores were broken into, resulted in the conviction of Steele and the ac quittal of Mebus. The two were apprehended in Portland, occu pying the same room, but Mebus got otf through an alibi, and a record clear of court and police proceedings. His employers al so testified in his favor. Later: Steele received not more than five years in the state penitentiary. The German trials of war criminals proved an utter farce. A few underlings received light sentences, while the arch crimin als remained unmolested. The Johnstone Flood which made such a sensation some years ago, was nothing compared to the present Colorado Hood.
